I've got a laptop with an approximately 1.4 Ghz processor and an AMD Radeon HD 7310 graphics card. I don't know a great deal about CPU hardware, so I have no idea if there's any additional relevant info.

Mmm, I don't think you could get it running in that case. Maybe try it if it gets a free weekend, but that's a really poor card, and this game is fairly intensive (and again, somewhat poorly optimized in my experience).

-snip-
I've heard Natural Selection was pretty good, and I've been thinking about buying it, but I've heard the game is pretty much murder if you're a noob at FPS games. Given that I'd be practically useless in a commanding role, would the game be enjoyable for someone of my almost-non-existant skill? Also, is it particularly graphically intensive?
Well, the thing about NS2 is that while you can get better equipment as the marines, or evolve as higher life-forms as the aliens, it really comes down to how good you are as a player. I, for instance, pretty much suck as a marine, because I have absolutely terrible accuracy, and I'm terrible as an alien, because they rely on melee attacks and I suck at those, so I usually fall into a support role, either play as an alien Gorge, which lets you place little mini-buildings, or get a welder as a marine, and just work on base construction and healing my teammate's armor. If you wait, eventually they tend to have free weekends on Steam, so you can try it out with some other noobs, and it gets pretty fun.

Also, being the commander isn't actually all that hard, it's a lot simpler than trying to play something like a RTS, particularly as the alien commander, because then you don't even have to work with your team, and you can deal with stuff on your own. When I first played, I avoided being the commander, thinking it was hard, until eventually I tried it because nobody was volunteering, and found I was actually better at that.

As for the graphics, you can make it pretty graphics intensive, but since I play on a lousy laptop, I turn down the graphics to absolute garbage, and it runs ok.

Oh look, I have a steam account.
Might as well chalk it up to Pathos.
As this point we might as well invoke interpretive dance and call it a day.

If you can't afford it, Tremulous is pretty much a freeware version of it.

Loaded up Rogue Legacy. Died about a dozen times over about 20 minutes. Par for the course, from what I've been reading.

Two boss fights in a row with no rings = absolute murder. I can semi-reliably beat Mecha Sonic, but the Egg Walker kicks my ass every time. Stupid spike fist rockets...

Hints for earlygame IWD in the spoiler:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Eventually you'll get good gear and enough xp to start fighting the regular way. But the spoiler helps you tide over the first few chapters.

I'm pretty sure that my Paladin is the only one who can't use slings, but I recently got plate armour meaning he's a big blob of AC and HP so he'll be okay (most of the time). Everyone else can use slings/bows so I guess I'll pull them back and bombard the enemy to bits. Or maybe I'll just pull Ryoko back, because she's the squishy druid who keeps on getting killed all the time (why the hell did they give 1d8 damage weapons to starting enemies?). My Cleric has enough AC and HP to tank as well. Or at least I hope she does.

IWD is like Baldur's Gate's less story driven, more action oriented younger brother. It's basically like you went from a Storyteller No Rails GM to a Railroad of Death GM. Because holy shit do they send some shit at you.

Good news if when I play Baldur's Gate then. A good story and not losing a party member every other encounter sounds lovely right about now.

Heh. I didn't say it was easy, mate. I guarantee that you will ragequit after at least two fights in that game, and the first game's end battle will make you scream bullshit. And the second game is... Different. Sure, you have all powerful high level mages. But so do the bad guys. They also have Iron/Adamantine Golems. And Dragons. And Beholders. And pretty much everything else that might be a real threat to a high level mage.

I got knocked into water, which resulted in me being dismounted from my dwarven Mecha and it being destroyed, this was bad news as by this point most of my expert footsoldiers had died leaving me with nothing but a pair of siege engineers and a nearly dead ballista. So naturally at this point some wandering bandits happen to come across my battle against the necromancer and, RNG being what it is, decide that they need to kill me. My siege engineers presumably followed the same fate short after.

Better than ragequitting in the opening dungeon because your guys keep on dying to a couple orcs with axes. I'm not asking for an easier game, just one that's more fair and less beholden to the whims of the RNG.

Turned into a red dragon after stepping in a polymorph trap. Seems awesome. My late kitten had angered a nearby dwarf, but I dealt with it easily. Then I eat the dwarf and BAM! Wide angle disintegration beam from the gods. Apparently that still counts as cannibalism even though polymorphed.

The only ones being referenced there are Better Dungeons, which provided the necromancer and the mecha, and Ancient Warfare, which provided my (insufficiently large) army.
