Of note:
A) Shooting a  shotgun off screen (or any weapon really) will result in a noise if you hit anything (which will then run and try to kill you), this allows you to spray attack areas and find out if enemies are nearby. Use this if you are going to go down a long corridor, or there is a large empty space in front of you.
B) Armor is crazy useful (especially against shotguns), you should have some on at all times (if at all possible).
C) Against enemies very far away the regular shotgun is probably better then a double barrel because it has far better spread. A single barrel has 15 range, while a DB has only 8. At 8 range (which is basically max sight range, but a tiny bit less), a DB does 20% damage ((2-5)X2), while a regular shotgun does (3-10). In or at near melee range a DB is far more damaging, but in general I would recommend a combat shotgun over both of them.

Finally figured out I had to refuel my super high tech spaceship with coal and went off to what looked to be the next happy planet over.

It is a moon biome, I only had enough fuel to get there, not back.  My character is still wearing the starting armor, which if I'm reading this right, is only 1 point better than bare naked feathers.  I put all my coal in the engine in a desperate attempt to get back, and can no longer build any kind of heat source.  (even if that would be enough to keep warm, which I'm doubting)

Whelp, so much for that character.

You can live on a moon if you got a single campfire - I found an Avian city there once and kept running through the town, one house at a time, picking up and putting down my campfires so I wouldn't freeze to death.

I ran out of ammo in the limbo level, and punched 2 hell barons to death.  Then I ran to the next level and nuked the anarachnatrons in the cave.

So I downloaded doomrl a while back, never played it.  instsalled it last night.  Screw the arena master.  Hesan atritous ass.  Three times Ive come against him, three times  i got wittled down by shotgunners.  I beat all of act I just fine, but him . . .  DB shotti + rockets not good enuff?

I'm going to assume you have shottyman by the time you encounter him.
First, pick off the weaker enemies from cover using your shotgun. The high spread means most of them should get damaged if you just blindly fire. Secondly, fire some rockets at his general location if you're not going to use them to kill the stronger enemies. Thirdly, when you see him, equip your strongest shotgun and activate run with tab. Move towards him and shoot him every turn. You will gradually do more and more damage while his will stay the same. This strategy has worked with me on UV.

I used a berserk pack to kill whatever formers I could without risking aggroing him, used tge health to kill tge things in back, swaped the rocket for the chainsaw if I had a db, dropped the shotti otherwise.

Then I beserked again and charged him.

Sir Useless the Paladin ventured into the Castle in the year 2512. He encountered many enemies, and easily repelled them, with hardly a scratch. Unfortunately, Sallos attacked him, and killed him. But luck was in his favor! The seemingly mortal blow was a mere flesh wound, and he got up to continue the fight. Then he stumbled into a bullet and died for real.
