After a lot of cutting and careful pulling of bigass rocks so that they form a somewhat climbable pile, quickly getting up before they slide away, I come up only to find... a music tape instead of the last of the boring rocks. This was already a rage, because now I had no idea where the last boring rock was. (I found the temple, the exit and the game machine already). At this point, I fall down and die. The tape did not count as a checkpoint and I would have to do all the cutting again. RAAAAAAAGHHH

On my best run ever; level 9 Technician with Fireangel; carrying the super shotgun, BFG9000, onyx red armor, napalm launcher, and Trigun.  I enter a cacodemon cave as the 15th level; it will be easy, especially compared to the previous levels - while I have only 6% health and no medkits, I can one-shot a cacodemon and they do on average 1 damage per hit through the armor.  However, I find that my starting area is surrounded with lava, and I have no Environment Suit.  At first I am pretty mad, getting ready to use a phase device and hope, but then I realise I have a blood skull. I use it to convert some dead cacodemons into 20% more health, and get ready to wade through the one-square-wide lava - it will take exactly 20% of my health, and leave me alive.  I step in, drop to 6% health, then step out.

Argh!!! Lava! You die!... Press <Enter>...

What?  I don't press enter, instead I investigate the screen, and the realise what happened. I pressed the wrong button, and stepped into more lava.

My new highscore, set by that run, is more than double my old one...

On another good run; now a level 8 Marine with two exotic armors.  I ran from The Wall, I am pretty sure with only one enemy left, because I had only 8% health, and no health items or skulls.  I end up in a demon/cacodemon cave, and from health pickups end up with 15% health.  Then I realise that the stairs are separated from me by one tile of lava, again.  I have some Plasteel boots, which reduce the lava damage to 3/4 of it's normal value, but that would still do 15% damage and kill me.  Fairly frustrated, I go looking through the cave for any health pickup I may have missed, when...

Argh!!! Lava! You die!... Press <Enter>...

I look at the screen, and eventually realise I stepped in a random lava square, which I had not noticed because it looked like the bloody and already red floor.

Seems like I need to pay more attention even once the level is clear; now my top two highscoring runs died to stupid  missteps.

I GUESS my last Giant Death Robot was a bit too close to the Nuke Site. Having no more defence or attack power kinda left me open for annihilation by EGYPT'S Giant Death Robots...

While running you take half damage from lava, which even ignoring your boots would have been enough for you to survive (with 3% hp left, which would have been either 1 or 2 health).

With your boots you would have taken significantly less, due to both the 2 protection and the 25% resistance, which would probably have reduced the damage taken down to 3.
After a bit of thought, the only way to have 15% health would be to be a marine (or have at least 1 level of the ironman trait) resulting in you having 60 max health, meaning you had 9. Running though would have cut you down to 10 health, and not running though set your health to exactly 0.

I could be wrong on the exact math, but I am pretty sure if you ran through it with the boots you would have survived. Your health would have been pretty low, and you might have died with a singlt hit next level, but you would have made it.

EDIT: I will note that if you start running while *on* lava/acid, you take a turn of damage while toggling it, so it isn't always the best idea to turn it on if you are just going to be on the lava/acid for a 1/2 turns.
EDIT2: Derp, you said you were a marine in the opening of your post, oh well, figured it out fine in the end anyways.
EDIT3: You could have saved your previous char by running as well. Oh well, tat least you know now.

Synchronized grenade throwing. It must have been a beautiful moment for the guys inside the red base, but I fairly ruined my pants when so many grenades went off at once that my computer locked up for several seconds. Almost everybody outside the base at that moment died.

Halo 1 on PC. Still the most fun I've ever had with an online shooter.

Killed by a pair of drow. I went from full health to dead before I could wake up. Note to self: Sleep resistance is vital. Eat all elves.

Come on you idiot bots! I'm 10 feet away from you, down a 6-inch ledge that you're supposed to be going down anyway. Maybe one of you idiots should come over and get the player character back on his feet?!

I came back to nethack after a while not playing and the game was just ridiculously nice to me.  Playing a human priestess, quickly I find a shield of reflection, then a hardware shop that contains every common tool in the game as well as a bag of holding, a magic lamp, and a magic marker.  On the next floor, I find a spellbook of identify, which due to starting able to cast find monster I can level up my divination to cast at will.  On that same floor I kill two paper golems, and I identify a scroll of teleport in a shop.

To summarize what the game has essentially just handed to me: reflect, the ability to identify objects at will, a wish, a magic marker along with 8 blank scrolls and a nice scroll to write with it, all the commonplace tools, and a bag of holding which I could easily bless.  This is on floor three.

I died on dungeon level 6 due to a combination of miswriting elbereth twice and GROSSLY underestimating how much damage a Mumak can do.  Yes, Nethack, you haven't changed a bit.

Flying a helicopter with a gunner, going to reinforce one of our bases that was under attack. Then lag hit, and I crashed into another helicopter. Killed myself, 3 teammates at least, and pretty much handed that command post to the other team on a silver platter. :-[

The RNG giveth, and the RNG taketh away. All of my more successful runs aren't anything special in the beginning; if I get phat lewtz in the first half dozen floors it's a sure sign SOMETHING is going to go horribly wrong.
