First serious Classical Ironman. I'm doing well, haven't lost any countries yet, and I'm getting ready to begin production of armor and laser weapons next council meeting. Then, Operation Shattered Hope happens (Ever notice how prophetic mission names are?). Against my better judgement, I accept a bomb disposal mission, since the cash will let me start upgrading my squad, and the terror mission was going to be coming up soon. To my sinking feeling, I see that it is based on the train depot, where I have almost always done badly. I quickly blitz foward, with my support securing the flank while my assualt and heavy move up the center. A thin man comes down the side of the train, and my support has an 80% chance to hit at a good distance. He misses. He is then killed in full cover. Then sectoids pop up, occupieng my main heavy and sniper in the train, while my assualt tries to deactivate nodes. Next turn, the thin man comes around the edge and shoots the assualt, putting him in critical condition. At this point there are two turns left before the bomb explodes. I start sending my sniper towards a node, while my heavy starts running towards my assualt with a medkit, and firing on the thin man. He misses, barely survives the next shot with one point, and revives the person. However, my sniper was unable to get to the next node, and I start a retreat. The sniper get's killed by a thin man out of his line of sight, and my heavy is killed running back to the skyranger by a sectiod on overwatch, again out of line of sight. Next mission is an abduction mission, and the only expeirenced people I have is a sniper in the medbay, a support, a heavy, and another sniper. I go to the construction site map, and my people take up a good position, with everyone in full cover. My assualt moves up a bit, and immidatly uncovers four floaters. He pulls back, revealing four sectoids. Because failure of this mission would lead to two countries leaving X-Com, which I could not afford, I attempt a stand. It is initially a success, with extreme levels of luck having the flanking floaters completely miss me. I manage to take out two floaters and a sectoid, while the remaing three sectoids for some reason don't enter the fight. Both of the floaters have one point left, so I switch to pistols. Everyone then manages to miss 60% shots, and my support get's criticaled. Next turn I kill both floaters. The sectoids finally come into play, mind melding and sending one out. EVERYONE misses, again, and he wounds all of my people before he dies. I then advance, but my support is killed by one of the mind melded sectiods, who had somehow penetrated my perimeter. None of my men have more then a 35% shot at him, and he is in a flanking position, so I quickly form a desparate gamble. I have one rookie, a support, and a sniper with squadsight. I send the rookie foward to get a line of sight on the mind melding sectiod, but my sniper, even with a perfect line of sight over open ground, isn't able to get a shot. So I run and gun my assualt up, but he is cut down by a sectoid on overwatch, even thou my counts had indicated that there were only two left. My rookie is killed next turn, and my sniper is cut down trying to get to the skyranger. Then both of my next missions are code blacks, due to someone panicking at someone getting killed, then that person kills another person, and you all know what a tantrum spiral looks like. Only it was on XCom. At this point, multiple nations have left, I don't have the money to do anything, and research has stalled. All because that one support missed that one stupid shot.
