I had gotten a (pre-built) SSTO space plane into orbit. I was testing out the in-line retractable docking port when boom, the rocket engine fell off. I give up on my docking attempt and decide to use RCS to lower my orbit and try to land. I actually manage to line up with the runway but the loss of the engine, and the low speed of landing just completely throw controlling it out the window. Long story, short. It ends in a fiery explosion.

I swear this game seems to delight in throwing my ships into the grinder -_-;

So I have two independent colonies near my homeworld. As soon as I get the proper tech, I build a fleet in order to glass the surfaces bring peace to those worlds. What shows up at my homeworld the very same turn the fleet is finished? The Herald. He sticks around outside of planetary missile range, preaching doom and gloom to the populace. I'm not gonna have any of that, so I send the fleet in to engage. The Herald sends two ships at me, and I target those instead.

Those two ships wipe out my entire fleet with incredibly advanced weapons while I'm running around with gauss drivers. If it weren't for the fact that the battle took place close enough to the planet that the defense silos managed to keep up a constant barrage, I wouldn't have destroyed either of them.

EDIT: Oh freaking hell.
After the Herald left, I built up a new fleet. Guess what shows up, and again on the same turn the fleet finishes?
Von Neumann machine. Did I mention that I'm still at gauss drivers and half the fleet is made of point-defense vessels? Because I am, and those are nearly useless here.
Six probes in the first wave. They fly in, those goddamn beams of their brush aside the few missiles I could muster against them. Their armor might as well be impervious to the slow-firing gauss drivers of my ships, and all six probes disintegrate a destroyer each before flying back to the mothership. The mothership constructs a whole new mothership, but thankfully they all decide to leave after that. Game calls it a victory. Yeah right!

I'd give up trying to conquer ANY sort of colony with only gauss, those MWMs the independent colonies have WILL overwhelm your point defense. Instead, tech up the proper racial tech until you can force planetary surrender and they'll actually join you automatically.

Also, yeah Herald sucks, but you can easily fight off Von Neumann with gauss if you have mass drivers and ap rounds. Though, if you don't have at LEAST mass drivers, why the hell are you doing ANYTHING but exploring and settling in the first place?

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

As I've discovered. Three ships made it out mostly intact.

It's not like I had a choice in this matter! Damn thing showed up at my homeworld, just like the Herald.

I meant that 5 destroyers armed with only gauss and mass drivers can easily beat off any von nuemann attack(ap is for the greater range and accuracy, it's not strictly necessary)

This was still early-game. Like, turn 35. I had been focusing my research on stuff like cruiser construction (better ships and better industry) and lightning emitters (because every other game so far has come up against those swarming enemies and I wanted to be prepared) and my researchers were constantly going over-budget. Point Defense in particular took four turns longer than it needed to.

Point is, eight destroyers of various types (all armed with standard gauss) went up against six Von Neumann probes and only two survived.

***********************

Oh, and my newest colony survived a single turn before it got hit by "slavers" and wiped out. This game is totally different than just about every other 4X I've played O_o

Whilst trying to bring myself through the slightly-irradiated Vault 34, I try to get to the Overseer's office to get the password to unlock the Armory. My companion Veronica and I are ambushed by 3 Vault-Security-Guards-turned-Glowing-Ones. Veronica is knocked unconscious by the guards, and I retreat down a hallway. After whipping out the 10mm SMG that I found and repaired, I took down one guard-turned-ghoul. His friends quickly avenged him and I was taken out by the radiation blast from one of the ghouls.

First serious Classical Ironman.  I'm doing well, haven't lost any countries yet, and I'm getting ready to begin production of armor and laser weapons next council meeting.  Then, Operation Shattered Hope happens (Ever notice how prophetic mission names are?).  Against my better judgement, I accept a bomb disposal mission, since the cash will let me start upgrading my squad, and the terror mission was going to be coming up soon.  To my sinking feeling, I see that it is based on the train depot, where I have almost always done badly.  I quickly blitz foward, with my support securing the flank while my assualt and heavy move up the center.  A thin man comes down the side of the train, and my support has an 80% chance to hit at a good distance.  He misses.  He is then killed in full cover.  Then sectoids pop up, occupieng my main heavy and sniper in the train, while my assualt tries to deactivate nodes.  Next turn, the thin man comes around the edge and shoots the assualt, putting him in critical condition.  At this point there are two turns left before the bomb explodes.  I start sending my sniper towards a node, while my heavy starts running towards my assualt with a medkit, and firing on the thin man.  He misses, barely survives the next shot with one point, and revives the person.  However, my sniper was unable to get to the next node, and I start a retreat.  The sniper get's killed by a thin man out of his line of sight, and my heavy is killed running back to the skyranger by a sectiod on overwatch, again out of line of sight.  Next mission is an abduction mission, and the only expeirenced people I have is a sniper in the medbay, a support, a heavy, and another sniper.  I go to the construction site map, and my people take up a good position, with everyone in full cover.  My assualt moves up a bit, and immidatly uncovers four floaters.  He pulls back, revealing four sectoids.  Because failure of this mission would lead to two countries leaving X-Com, which I could not afford, I attempt a stand.  It is initially a success, with extreme levels of luck having the flanking floaters completely miss me.  I manage to take out two floaters and a sectoid, while the remaing three sectoids for some reason don't enter the fight.  Both of the floaters have one point left, so I switch to pistols.  Everyone then manages to miss 60% shots, and my support get's criticaled.  Next turn I kill both floaters.  The sectoids finally come into play, mind melding and sending one out.  EVERYONE misses, again, and he wounds all of my people before he dies.  I then advance, but my support is killed by one of the mind melded sectiods, who had somehow penetrated my perimeter.  None of my men have more then a 35% shot at him, and he is in a flanking position, so I quickly form a desparate gamble.  I have one rookie, a support, and a sniper with squadsight.  I send the rookie foward to get a line of sight on the mind melding sectiod, but my sniper, even with a perfect line of sight over open ground, isn't able to get a shot.  So I run and gun my assualt up, but he is cut down by a sectoid on overwatch, even thou my counts had indicated that there were only two left.  My rookie is killed next turn, and my sniper is cut down trying to get to the skyranger.  Then both of my next missions are code blacks, due to someone panicking at someone getting killed, then that person kills another person, and you all know what a tantrum spiral looks like.  Only it was on XCom.  At this point, multiple nations have left, I don't have the money to do anything, and research has stalled.  All because that one support missed that one stupid shot.

I was able to take out a Dominion Battlecruiser mano-a-mano with a Galaxy class starship with some nifty moves; but six Delta Flyers was too much for the vessel to withstand.

Running around in the Jungle, I spy a dice game with a box of 12 bombs up for the prize. I pay my fee, pick up the first die, and toss it towards the entrance of the store.

I forgot that I was wearing the Pitcher's Mitt. The die went sailing out of the store, the shopkeep accused me of theft, and he deposited a bunch of buckshot directly into my disbelieving face.

"Ha ha," I said. "I defeated <Zeome> the false prophet in The Depth of Lesimas. I am untouchable now."
So I decided to take on a Fort of Chaos boss. The closest one was <Utima> the destroyer of Xeren, so I headed to that fort first.
Walking down the hallway, I put on all the buffs I had, summoning all my allies from wherever they go when you tell them to "wait in town".
I stepped into the chamber, spotted <Utima>, and....

...she shot me in the face and I was drawn into a chaotic vortex, along with all my pets. What happened to superb #####+ chaos resistance?

Sooo, turns out standing in the fire is a bad idea, especially when there's nothing to second wind off. Especially with a shield with minuscule capacity.

It all began when I accidentally pressed 'x' while facing a store.

I, of course, am not an idiot, so I repeatedly shot the poor shopkeeper until he dropped his gold nuggets. I took his shotgun.

Countless of shopkeepers, I shot them all down.

I entered the black market, and slaughtered them. The loot was nice.

I soon regret my decision when I reached World 3. I accidentally dodge a bullet off into the pit.

2 months into my stewardship of the project, and things were going well. The inital base was finished, and churning out reserach projects at a slow but dependable rate. The workshop was keeping us well armed and armoured. A cluster of SAM sites were easily dealing with lighter probes into sucured airspace, and our interceptors could mop up anything that penetrated the umbrella. My ground combat squad consisted of 7 veterans, with spot 8 seemingly cursed, with rookies rotating into it and out of it as they were wounded. These 8 easily dispatched the enemy in a terror mission in the Brazilian rainforest, only to be intecepted over the Atlantic on thier way home by a class of enemy ship not yet seen with capabilites beyond what the dropship could outrun, outmanouver or outgun. All 8, thier pilot, a huge amount of gear and loot, and the burning wreck of the dropship went down, and sunk without a trace. No survivors. 20 days left in the month, with no recruits availiable save for wounded rookies in my hospital, and not enough gear to scrape together a stopgap squad available. With nobody to lead the resistance, Earth falls in a matter of weeks.
