Whenever the door controls catch on fire, it is ALWAYS a good idea to close up everything.  Unless the fire is going to be going out in a second or two.

Ok, then you were just screwed.  Unless you know the proper workarounds, that is...
Next time that happens, look at the status screen at the bottom right for your various systems.  It will not only show how damaged a system is (How long until it goes from a green bar to a red bar,) but also if it is on fire or not.

Actually, I usually turn off oxygen for a bit and the fire starves itself out quickly.  That way you also don't have to worry about half your ship being vacuum when the doors break.

When I do that I always forget to turn it back on.  Cue sudden scramble for pause as everyone dies.

Not dead yet, but...

Small test game, me against the Zuul. I start by building three long-range ships and send them scouting along three of the four(!) nodelanes I have access to.

First system: Swarm. My scout barely has time to turn around before it is vaporized by space bugs.
Second system: Alien Derelict. After seeing what the Swarm does, I hightail it out of there.
Third system: A second Alien Derelict. This time I get curious as the previous derelict didn't move. I send my scout in to investigate and get blown to smithereens.

So I only have one avenue of exploration available and found a colony at the first habitable world I find (it takes a while). Guess which shows up at the colony five turns later? Von Neumann. I lose most of my pitiful tier-1 defense fleet before it decides to go away on its own.

Oh, and just about every planet in this galaxy that I've been forced to skip is perfectly habitable for the Zuul. I think it might be time to turtle.

Sword of the Stars

Abbeydevours, Bandit Chief, Stood alone, surveying the man who had singlehandedly slain his men. A peasant, brandishing a copper sword, covered in the blood of his best bandits. The two stood, facing each other for a moment, before the peasant charged to meet him. Swords clashed, tensely, for several minutes, opening small cuts on both sides. Suddenly, sensing weakness, the peasant plunges his blade into the heart of the bandit lord. He reacts quickly, tearing the blade out of his chest, then turning it on his assailt, Hacking into his chest with wild abandon. He sank to the ground, motionless, blade still grasped in his cold, dead hands.



The peasant crawled, slowly, to the stream, blood gushing from his punctured lung, the contents of his stomach exposed to the sky. He took one last drink, before sucumbing to the pain and bleeding to death.

I and my ragtag band of two monkey mystics and a flying ogre take on a group of goblins. I throw a potion of darkness, a goblin conjurer summons spectral blades, then he steps on a paralysis trap. Everyone freezes in place. Everyone except the spectral blades.

Super Meat Boy

Responding to reports of abductions in downtown London, a squadron was quickly dispatched. Once on the ground, the team of five highly skilled and well-equipped commandos and a S.H.I.V. (remote super-heavy infantry vehicle) made quick work of three Muton warbands and Sectoid patrol.

Then a single Cyberdisc appeared. 

Ironically, the one soldier survived after all his comrades had been killed and managed to single-handedly destroy both the Cyberdisc and it's drone, after the latter had repaired the former to full health, was a rookie. From some insignificant and probably impoverished and illiterate African country, to boot!
