...Ahem. So, anyway. Mexico City was under attack, and we
had to take on this mission lest our funding be cut completely. Despite a great deal of successful research and some major advances in armour and weapons tech, we hadn't had a great deal of success in combat with the alien menace.
So we go in. Hell, we didn't even have the
tank this time- just a few laser rifles, two plasma pistols and a heavy laser. Despite that we were handling ourselves fairly well, gunning down a heap of strange, hulking orange-ish coloured aliens and making our way down an alley towards a petrol station.
We lost one or two soldiers in that alley, caught in a crossfire we'd unwittingly marched into before scrambling for cover in and around a large warehouse to one side. Most of the squad were hunkered down inside, using windows, the door and various holes blasted in the walls to shoot through, taking down any aliens showing their face.
Two squad members were still outside, and one of them moved over and grabbed up one of the alien's grenades as she made her way inside. (We'd just studied how to use the bloody things, so I figured they'd come in handy- we'd already blown up the aforementioned garage with one.)
The other guy outside covered her as she did so, taking potshots at an enemy through a window down the street.
It all actually seemed to be going pretty well- the warehouse was a good defensible location, once I got everyone inside I should be pretty much set. Suddenly there was a horrible slashing sound and a scream. It took me a moment to realise what was going on, and the outside guy turned to his left, saw his comrade's gun lying discarded on the pavement- and a horrible zombie-like
thing standing in her place. Ohhh shiiiiit.
The whole squad charged outside and, with a lot of combined fire, managed to bring down both it, the monster that spawned when it died
and the alien that caused it to start with.
Then we resumed our position in the warehouse, blazing away at the other aliens infesting the city outside. But there were more of them.
...Long story short, one of my last four squad members glanced behind him and spotted a horrible, spiny black figure lurking between the crates- he ran around the corner to try and kill it, only to hear a scream from behind him as his teammate went down. He died next, and then the others failed to take out the ensuing swarm. One guy tried to take shelter in an office, but he didn't even make it through the door.
The last guy, finally giving up on avenging his friends, legged it for the front entrance- but it was futile. He managed to half-turn just in time to see the thing scuttle up with supernatural agility and shred him.
That was fucking terrifying. I already liked this game, but... Now I really love it.
