After withholding tech and forcibly being pacifist, (pressurising other nations with superior culture output, only having units within cities to fortify them) the nation of Anforn was declared war upon by Alexander the Great.
After a disastrous war, where I managed to push them back from my borders, and take the fight to Greece, I lost unit after unit, continually losing battles with 65-75% odds to win. We're talking Cavalry vs Longbowman in town with no fortifications. Eventually, after his second to last troop was destroyed, Alexander sued for peace; I had no opportunity but to agree because the war was very costly, and my civics weren't exactly set up for war.
Moments later, after I'd demilitarised my remaining un-needed troops, now I wasn't at war, Catherine of Russia declared war on me. I hurriedly shored up my northern towns that shared the border with Catherine, namely Nrrgg and Serpenat. Catherine came within a turn of taking Serpenat, twice. Then I get the message that Huayna Capac, head of the Incans, cancelled open borders on me, then declared war.
I enlisted Asoka of India and his troops to aid me. He agreed for some tech. Isabella of Spain joined the fight against Russia of her own accord. Spain captures two Russian towns; after some initial hiccups in combat, I capture two more. Yaroslavl, and Yakutsk. Yaroslavl is safely held, but Yakutsk is recaptured a turn after I capture it; I recapture it again.
After Yakutsk finally accepts the dominion of Anforn, I start the push toward Moscow. Isabella suddenly gets cold feet after Russia captures half her territory. Asoka is both too far away and too tied up in his fight with Qin Shi Huang of China to send troops. England offers help for some gold.
So now it's England + 'Anforn' (really Persia) vs Russia. the Incans are also vs me, but haven't attacked yet.
All of a sudden, after Qin Shi Huang demands I cancel trade routes with Asoka (who shares a very close border with me) and I refuse, they cancel Open Borders. No problem, I don't really do much with them anyway.
The fight with Russia goes poorly. Some of their troops maraude around my lands pillaging and razing improvements, making it harder for me to keep up offensive pressure. I come very close to capturing Moscow, before Qin Shi Huang declares war on me. His overland route is via Mongolia, otherwise he has no ability to assault me.
Mongolia previously was 'Annoyed' by him, but swiftly they sign Open Borders, allowing Chinese troops to pass through Mongolia. The Chinese are very heavily militarised, and I hurriedly sue for peace with Russia. They agree, but then a turn later, Yakutsk faces a Russian revolt, meaning it's in danger of leaving my empire from overwhelmed culture.
Yakutsk returns to Russian control, taking at least four troops with it.
I have to play very defensive, but the damage from Russia's army has taken its toll. First, Parascrap falls. I recapture Parascrap, take the fight to Beijing, the nearest city, but they receive reinforcements and destroy my scant technologically advanced force.
Parascrap falls again, and is razed. A coupla turns later, Serpenat, Yaroslavl, Nrrg and Agrom fall.
I withdraw my troops from the weaker towns, prepared to lose them if it means I can keep my larger towns.
Incan troops arrive in the south of my empire, and lay siege to Hereford. Hereford is a very powerful town in ill health caused by the floodplains near by breeding infection, etc.
Hereford falls.
Then it's just my capital Hapstan and the small port town of Astarte left.
Russia declares war. China begins pillaging the north of my tattered empire. Incans raze Hereford, and begin advancing to Astarte. Astarte falls after nearly fighting off the entire Incan force.
Hapstan has twelve troops defending it; mainly musketman and cavalry (yes I know they receive no defense bonus, but any troop is better than no troop.)
Russia sends eight troops. China's force of approximately seven units, and the remaining two Incan units arrive to take Hapstan.
I plead with Mongolia, England, America, Egypt, France and Spain to send any aid, for any remaining techs. They are not prepared to take on the now mighty Russia. Most don't wish to attack the Incans.
In the time it takes for the combined Russian-Incan-Chinese alliance to whittle Hapstan down to a single injured musketman, India takes some massive losses and are forced to retreat to their final town of Bangalore. They freak out and cancel their war with China who now has some shiny new indian cities.
Hapstan falls, finally, the same turn England and Mongolia finally agree to declare war on China.
Thus ends the empire of Anforn (really Persia.) 4000 BC - 1780 AD.
Civilisation IV, playing the '18civs' scenario in a real world shaped map, on a highish difficulty.
It was great fun while it lasted.
