Keep in mind, though - as soon as weapons properly get damaged during combat, a silver warhammer will stay in one piece for at best three swings.

That could have gone better. Very first game of xcom and I managed to shoot up a ufo and send out the sky ranger. Easy enough. Right away we were taking fire and managed to drop the sectoid rather quickly. Things were looking easy up until a sectoid began to shoot from behind a hill. I decided to split my 8 man squad into 2 teams. One for the ufo and one for the hill. The ufo went great no deaths and all of the enemy inside were dead. The hill ended in the entire group dead. The remaining enemy quickly shifted their attention to my remaining men. Quickly people began to die from plasma to the face. Only one man left named Oscar with his trusty autocannon. Charging through fire and running like crazy he managed to get back to the skyranger alive. Of course the first thing I decide to do is charge him back outside to exact revenge and be badass. Cue 2 aliens waiting outside guns drawn blasting him to bits. In the end all soldiers dead and no skyranger made me decide to abandon the base.

After that, then I wonder what the best hammers will be? I hope Toady will let us fill it with lead to get a better swing. The handle could be steel or adamantine and then the head is hollow filled with lead or gold or even platinum.

Or air, for trainin' hammers.

If you're not doing so already, you can also burn your vaunt for another, smaller, short-duration shield that miiiight just be enough to save your ass.
