Trying to do the lvl 96 trick in Suikoden, I was instantly killed by 2 Elite soldiers, 3 hellhounds and a whip master.

All I need to do is last a turn so I can banish them to hell...

Elona.

That is the highest concentration of dying I have ever, ever, ever experienced.

Elona isn't so bad once you learn to just run away from everything and do deliveries instead.

But, see, what I want is to kill things.

Is there ever a part of the game that makes killing things a good idea?  Or must I always be killing-less?

You could always play Crawl. Lots of killing in that.

Elona's combat/levelup system is horrifically broken in my opinion so no there is no such time unless you munchkin like an utter bastard.  This is sad though cause the rest of the game is epic.

Oh... huh.  Okay, thanks.  I'll have to reconsider what I'm doing, then.

It's just annoying that so many of the proffered quests seem to involve fighting... =/

Crawl: my lvl 8 mummy summoner of sif muna was being double shot by a centaur on D:5, I escaped up the stairs only to find another centaur, summoned 3 imps for meatshields and read a teleport scroll, only to teleport 3 tiles north. Then one of my imps blinked away, and the centaur 2 shotted me. FUUUUUUUUUCK

Yeah, it's horribly broken. A real pity too, since the game's epic. One thing to note is that experience points are empty, meaning to say that you should avoid leveling up at all costs and train your skills manually instead.

Paying folks to increase the skill rate, then training the skill manually (music instrument for performer for example.).

Aside from that, there's nothing else you can do, but if you try to stall the levels, then you'll find that you have learned more skills and enhanced them than what it would be if you just plainly leveled up.

Just died being mauled by a horde of 13 zombies, 4 boomers, 1 shocker zombie and a rabid squirrel, right as I lit the middle of 10-12 gas pumps on fire... Fuckers didn't even give me enough time to watch it all blow. Hopefully my guy actually set it aflame before dying and I'll start my new character to the beat of a dozen zombies' death wails :P
