Creating a new character, I manage to escape from the starting dungeon at level 3 in just under 10 minutes. I escape from the prison, into the glorious light and safety of a giant wolf that is hanging around just outside the prison entrance for some reason.

Don't you get teleported by that ghost mage woman when you leave the prison? Or do you mean that?

You exit by something called a 'shift gate'. I think it's a part of the building, since Jagar Tharn apparently used the tunnels himself to move about and he was a powerful battlemage. However, when you spawn outside, you're standing in front of a regular door that is attached to a castle or prison-like building.

I tried going in the door to escape the wolf, but the game hung for a second and then behaved as if I had just left the prison, facing me in the right direction and restarting the music, rather than letting me back in the dungeon. Mysterious!

I thought the game drops you in a random town in your race's province?

Siezed by sudden inspiration, I designed a new ship, then started playing around in Sandbox mode. Eventually I pit six of the new design against an older design that was smaller but had more HP and shittons of guns. After a long fight, the older ship eventually just blasted away the guns on the new ones, so I ordered all of them to kamikaze. Cue the older battleship being grapeshotted by the exploding pieces of the new ones.

The good news is, the old ship was destroyed in the barrage. Three of them exploded immediately, breaking away most of the front of the enemy ship and exposing the core. One kinda just exploded. The next took out most of the core's HP, while the last one killed it.

A link to Battleships Forever?
Or to the ships that I was using? Because those aren't designs I'm actually going to release to the public or anything, I was just messing around.

It does, but I think the ghost lady mentioned that the particular tunnels you start in were used by Tharn himself. (I misread "West, then south" as "South, then west" multiple times in a row, but you hush about that, I'm lots more gooderer at reading comprehension). Regardless, it seems to me based on my few latest attempts that you're always dropped outside a doorway of some kind.

Back on topic, I figured I'd give Daggerfall another shot as well since Arena has grown on me quite a bit. On one of the random quests I pick up, I'm supposed to find some jewel in some dungeon, which actually turns out to be a pretty huge castle. Looks scary, but that's just because I arrived at night, I'm sure it's not as bad as Privateer's Hold.

Then I enter the main chamber and find giant blue spiders that paralyze every other hit, as well as a bunch of bandits with ranged attacks. Super.

I managed to kill the njerpez warrior who chased me as I fled from the camp, but succumbed to starvation several days afterwards. As much as that sort of thing normally irritates me, I do understand now why people playing this game turn to... other food sources.

Had a MiFi going, happily clearing out the Lair, one-shotting practically everything with a flaming scimitar I picked up from a bottled efreet. Got a couple of gifts from Okawaru, although they were really nothing special. Wander into Swamp, kill a few giant leeches and a hydra, and get a gift from Okawaru.

+12/+16 Plutonium Sword. Yes.

So, I curbstomp a few leeches with it, and take it off due to shenanigans with contamination making me have teleportitis and a couple of other not-so-pleasant issues, when I am stalked by a titanic slime creature. I equip the Plutonium sword and try to hack up the slimes that are still jumping on it, and the damn thing one-shots me.

Fuck you, Crawl. You're horrible, and I hope you know that.

Titanic slimes are horrible and can one-shot most characters. That's the kind of thing to run away from and hope it falls apart.

Yeah, you should never really fight any slime with more then 2 component slimes in melee. Even as a tanky char anything over that can start to get both really dangerous and really hard to kill, its far better to just run away and pick them off one by one whenever possible.

Not dead, but probably getting there. Thanks to a combination of Weak Stomach and toilet water, I'm vomiting up pretty much my entire food and (toilet) water supply. It's late at night and I can't see well enough to hunt, and have little material to start a fire to cook with.

NEVER drink unpurified water.  It never ends up well.  Wait until the next day, and then get something.
