*sigh* When will companies realize that DRM will only hurt their customers? It is not like the pirates have to put up with it, as the game crackers disable the whole thing.

I guess you could theoretically enjoy the game sans DRM by pirating it, yes. Of course, we don't condone any sort of piracy around here. Really.

*coughs*

(Though I should point out, and this is strange by Ubisoft standards, it's not always-online DRM, at least not as far as Anno is concerned. I played it just fine after my connection had died, though you lose access to some minor features that require a connection, and I HAD booted up the game prior to my internet blackout, so your mileage may vary.)

I'd do a bloody petition, but I highly doubt it'd change anything, given how they ignore the people that are complaining. for once I feel sorely tempted to pirate it to tell ubisoft to go fuck itself.
But then you would get the first version of the game (unless there are any pieces of DLC to it), which is probably buggier than magicka was on release if I know Ubisoft correctly.
Basically, Ubisoft is so bad at coding games that it is not even worth pirating their stuff. Even good games can have bad code.

...not that I'm endorsing piracy. It is a horrible thing, but it is mostly caused by a lack of a good service. DRM is not exactly good service, with the rare exception of steam.

I'm sure the crackers put out patches. Probably more current than the official ones too.

I'm kinda losing my faith in mainstream humanity... Why do companies do this and why do we put up with it?

I would honestly like seeing if a representitive sample turned up more malware (in the broadest definition possible) in unofficial sources versus official ones. I don't have any experience with it really, but I figure that the rate of tampering in unofficial distribution must be overstated, because it is still so popular even among the computer-savvy.

Almost all official games nowadays come with what fits the traditional definition of 'malware' compiled in. Most (but not all) of these portions have to be deliberately broken for hassle-free unofficial distribution, and I would imagine that the vast majority of people who do this refrain from re-infecting it with something worse.

Of course the upper bar on severity of adulteration is higher, but the basic point of most of the modifications made IS to remove spyware and functionality-hampering code.

Let's get this thing back on the rails, m'kay?

A Vindicare assassin snuck behind the lines and killed my Ethereal when I wasn't looking. The resultant army-wide penalties broke my troops, leading to my eventual defeat.

Anti-piracy measures are a bit silly anyway. Just because somebody can't pirate something won't make them buy it, if they liked it enough to buy it then they already would have.

Anywhos: I got lost and mobbed by the larvae things. In the first dungeon.

Well how did you think difficulty worked in a strategy game? The higher the difficulty, the more the AI gets to cheat.

Got overconfident and a lifedraining scarecrow got me, rather than the other way round. Wasn't far from a friendly tower either.

I joined a softball team and caught a pop fly. The excitement apparently made my heart go out (despite being deemed healthy by a check-up just one turn ago).
