This keeps happening to me. It's quite annoying, especially when it's a day's travel from anywhere I can stay.

Speaking of the children, those things are tougher than their parents. I spent several dozen turns strangling one, while my various friends wailed on it. I promptly gave up on strangling, and went directly to using my mace an various knives I've got. It still put up a freaking absurd fight.

Didn't die, though, thankfully. Thank goodness for my various friends, who while wounded are still alive.

And then I got jumped by bandits. Took them all out except for one axeman whose leg I cut off. Turns out missing limbs is never an impediment in Dwarf Fortress: I came over to finish him and he cut my head off.

My team had been casing a mansion for 7 hours when we finally broke in. Unfortunately we took too long and law enforcement circled us and I was killed in the ensuing gunfight.

Thought I could kill the outlaws on time, while I was totally unskilled in all the arts save reading.

Turns out my elven invincibility spell wore off a bit too early.

What sorcery is this?
When did reading made its way into DF? Or is this some kind of mod I am unaware of?

The latest version allows you to read books to learn necromancy. I haven't checked the mods yet but I'm sure there's a lot of new spells out there. ^^^

The 'Reader' skill is on the second page of skills, as in, scroll to the bottom to access it.

Also, you have to read stone slabs found in the necromancer towers, not from books.  Books have cool titles ( sometimes ) but do absolutely nothing.

The magic's in the slabs.

It also allows you to read the signs that hang over the shops as well, though obviously learning necromancy is a better use of the skill.

Is it just me or are there a LOT more Axe Lord and Master Lasher and Swordmaster bandits with awesome stuff (masterwork weapons, actual metal armor) around nowadays?
