Not so much my death but the death of thousands upon thousands of civilians.
I sent settlers to build a nice little village. Near the ocean, lots of forest and mountains nearby for production a gold vein and a mithril vein. Pretty nice spot. Outpost got deserted due to bad population growth rolls causing it to lose more than it gains, It's gone before it even became a real village.
Send another group of settlers there. Now there is another already established village somewhat nearby and a road being built to link the sites. The RNG decides to name the rebuilt outpost Doomcastle. Fitting. It becomes a village successfully. Once it builds a population of about 3000. Giant spiders show up and jump the village with no warning. village is reduced to ruins.
Defenses from the nearby established city clear out the ruins and another group of settlers from the capital cross the ocean and rebuild the town. This time I manually name the outpost Lostgame. And proceed to set scouting units to get warning before another attack from fast units. And the village successfully repels 4 monster attacks with aid from the nearby city traveling on the magical road linking them. At a population of about 10000 the city falls to 4 wild bears...I saw them coming, but I was distracted by army on army combat on another plane and forgot to move defenses to intercept.
So much death. I am now sending another settlement group. This time dark elves. If the city is fated to be destroyed time and time again, I would rather it be elves dying than my own guys.
