What irritates me the most about combat is that you're given cover-shooter controls, yet the enemies often don't behave like cover-shooter enemies. It's like trying to play Gradius as a JRPG character, or Mortal Kombat as Mario.

I don't remember having all that much difficulty dealing with Benezia, to be honest. In my experience she's just as vulnerable to Stasis, Overheat, etc as you are, so hitting her with one or more of those at the beginning of each round gives you some breathing room for dealing with the geth reinforcements. Also (and I may be mis-remembering, it's been a while), I think lowering her health enough will cause her to stop attacking until the next wave.

Damn you Oswald the Resource Trader! Stop showing up at my trading post. I need freaking livestock! You have nothing I want, go away!

I don't remember being able to damage her before she stops summoning - she takes damage every time she calls reinforcements, I think. It's also a mixed group of Geth and Asari as well.

There should be a spot in at least one of the corners that gives you cover from Benezia and the troops she calls in. Grenades and shotguns are effective here I think.

I've also never played above the second-lowest difficulty.

Hmm, you might be right. But it should still be possible to limit the amount of damage Benezia can do while you focus on her underlings.

I just blast her full-bore in the face with an assault rifle, it works well enough.

Did you know that in Brutal Doom, Barons of Hell can throw barrels at you? Because I didn't.

Now I know.

I hacked a door and killed some guards, went down a hall or two, then SURPRISE! BOSS FIGHT! I died in short order due to the sudden onslaught of very tough dudes.

Mass Effect. This black blob glitch is really irritating me, the game is very pretty when you don't have to turn off all the dynamic lighting because of a stupid bug.

EDIT:

Benezia knocked me over, ran up to me, then shot me 50 billion times before I could even start to get up. It's no fun when the NPCs are actually as smart as human players :(

Mass Effect again.
Oh, right, the Benezia fight.
Now, see, the problem with ME1 is that unless your armour has at least one in the psionic protection or whatever that part is called now, you cannot block whatsoever against any bionic attacks (or whatever those things are called now), but for some reason, playing the soldier class, having a suit with even a 1 on that bionic protection stat practically made me invulnerable to pretty much every hand wavy glowing attack.

It proves especially useful during the bionic cult mission if you haven't buffed your intimidate/persuade skill high enough (and if you like getting the best outcomes all the time I really suggest you do so) or that one bionic revolt on the ship mission.

I'm an infiltrator or something, assault rifles and shotguns are useless to me. I kept shooting until I overheated and I think I hit her maybe twice, from just a few feet away. I like pistols; I have this ability that makes it so pistols have this cool POW POW POW POW sound and do a ton of damage. I kinda wish I'd picked a soldier because I seem pretty fragile, but I'm too far in the campaign for do-overs now.

Actually, Infiltrators are exactly as tanky as soldiers. Here's how.

Step 1: Get Tactical Armor to 6 so you can get Fitness.
Step 2: Max Fitness so you have Master Immunity.
Step 3: Pick the Commando class upgrade after doing *a certain side mission* and rank it up to 9 for faster Immunity cooldowns.
Step 4: Bind Immunity to a hotkey and use it whenever it's off cooldown.
Step 5: Enjoy nothing being able to hurt you.

Note that this ability is only available to Infiltrators and Soldiers, so if you're going to play on the hardest difficulty, you should probably be one of those two classes for that run. :P

Its funny, I would consider both those classes to also be the viable ones in higher difficulties of ME2, on account of relying on physical damage instead of abilities. The way biotics works in ME2 is that most biotic abilities will only work on enemies that are down to their last health bar.  But most enemies in the higher difficulties have multiple health bars representing shields and armor, which have more health then their actual health.  So biotics turns into a tool for finishing off enemies that are very low health.  Not that useful.  Tech might still be good, I never really bothered with tech except for Tali's drone.

Biotics are fun on the lower difficulties, yeah, but I beat all three Mass Effects on the hardest difficulty with an Infiltrator. Immunity is OP in ME1, and the Tactical Cloak is OP in 2/3. Vanguards are viable in 3 if you're will to spam Charge/Nova though.

My character in ME1 was an infiltrator but I though the constant teleporting through walls looked cheesey so I just made him a soldier.  Then for continuity purposes I gave him that biotic ability that lifts enemies up and slams them into the ground and the super shotgun.

The slo-mo ability is kind of crazy; maxed out it makes you already large health pool 50% bigger and IRRC you shoot at the normal speed relative to enemies but you actually move significantly faster.

Yeah, Adrenaline is pretty good; paired with the Mattock Rifle I was able to defeat the last boss's first phase the first time his weak points opened. :P

My "canon" Shep is a Soldier, and I never regretted it. Funnily enough he also uses the Mattock rifle in ME3 :P
