The arachnotrons on Dead Simple are surprisingly sneaky. And the blur spheres are pretty useless because every monster on the map hears me as soon as I fire a shot, and there's no way to lose them afterwards.

Doom II. A step down from the original IMO but still breddy gud.

What's always fun to do is go berserker on them while invisible (they offset their firing a bit (1 in 3 shots go your way as if not blind); read the bullets, and you can dodge them easily), and punch out most-all of the arachnotrons if you're foolish brave enough. Save the megasphere for when you leave the level.

For the truly masochistic, do this on Nightmare.

We need a challenge thread. Game: Doom 2, Level: Dead Simple (Level 7), Goal: Kill everyone with good ol' fisticuffs (Hint: Berserk mode lasts until the end of the level, not when the screen's no longer red). I think I pulled it off before for the hell of it. Hellishly difficult, but all kinds of fun.

There are UV Tyson runs of the final boss (ultra violent difficulty, melee and pistol only). It's insane.

If I thought E4M1 was hard on PC, it's just about impossible on Xbox with limited turning speed and imprecise aiming.

So it turns out that trying for level 70 of the Pit just after Chapter 2 is kind of a bad idea if you don't know exactly what you're doing. It also turns out that I don't know exactly what I'm doing.

As opposed to Doom's crushers, which can typically be survived with enough health and armor, Quake's crushing traps just kill you outright.

Off topic: I just realized that I find Quake more visually pleasing than Quake 2, even though I say with conviction that both games are butt-ugly to look at from both technical (yes I realize they were ground-breaking at the time, but damn that Jell-O chaingun in Q2) and aesthetic standpoints.

Liberal Crime Squad

Zapped by a Shambler. Clawed by a Shambler. Knocked off a platform to my death by a Shambler. Chased by a Shambler into a much more dangerous group of enemies. Panic-fired at a Shambler who was too close when I had the Grenade Launcher out.

Shamblers are painful to fight is my point here.

Quake

Got lost while chasing after a secret and couldn't find my way back, so I had to use console cheats to get back to where I had been. I count that as a death, since the game pretty much "beat" me at that point.

Quake again.

So many guardsmen. SO MANY GUARDSMEN. SO MANY GUARDSMEN. I did a 4v4. My three AI teammates got destroyed then all four IG insane difficulty AIs drowned me in blood. I lasted fifteen minutes.

Shamblers are just cool. Although absolutely painful, they're my favorite Quake enemy so far.

Also, maybe DoomRL is referencing the Dimensional Shambler instead; Quake's Shambler is pretty much the same thing.

A routine zombie killing went terribly wrong when I walked off the roof of a 2nd story building and greeted the green grass with my face.

After half a day of scavenging and surviving two broken legs, being mobbed by 4 zombies at a time, being shot at by other players, I finally pair the right ammo with the gun I have and I can now fight back.  Still scavenging though and I literally walked off into the air while attempting to get on a ladder.
