Ragequit after Distant Worlds made me get a critical research failure on hyperdrive technology FOUR TIMES.
Everyone else had them at that point. I was the only one without, because the game went 'Fuck you. Fuck you. Fuck you again. Fuck you...'
Heh. One time I was playing Life (the board game) at a friend's house and hit the tornado four times. It's near the start but sends the player back about a dozen squares. The nice thing about playing with friends is that we all laughed together (also Life is a stupid no-skill game for casuals
)
Some guerrillas asked me to clear out an oasis full of other guerrillas to secure them several crates of gold. I can't take any gold. They won't ask their soldiers in the field not to shoot me. Okaaaay...
I get a call from Flora who actually tells me what the hell is going on. She sends me on a sidequest to assassinate the puppet king, and in return she convinces all the enemy guards to leave the oasis! Sweet! The prince even gives me a truck with gold rims in return for assassinating his father. Gotta love royalty.
Apparently I still need to "tag" the gold though, so I drive over to the oasis. Flora's there to back me up, and says the troops will return any second. Huh, well I have a sniper rifle... I spend a few minutes scanning the desert horizon. Pretty good visibility, should be able to pick them off as they approach no problem. Where... are they?
Oh, I'm supposed to climb down these two ladders into a well and tag the gold with my phone, alright. The *instant* I do so, gunfire explodes from above. 10 seconds later I emerge from the well to find Flora dying, and 4 ARA soldiers at SMG range shooting me up. I eventually take them out with a pistol, but the other six take me down as I'm trying to heal Flora (apparently you have to hit H multiple times to progress through the healing process, I sat there taunting her with the syringe for a while). Warren dragged me to "safety" (I do love that mechanic) but there was little cover to be had in the desert. Warren went down, and I shortly after.
So basically completing the side quest gives you a NPC to protect and forces you to get ambushed in the desert, instead of assaulting from a distance. And I don't see any way to *keep* the gold-rimmed truck, though it did make me laugh. Still, I did pull through on my third attempt despite THREE GUN EXPLOSIONS. I should stop using scavenged weapons...
I'm actually *really* enjoying this!
