I've heard Natural Selection was pretty good, and I've been thinking about buying it, but I've heard the game is pretty much murder if you're a noob at FPS games. Given that I'd be practically useless in a commanding role, would the game be enjoyable for someone of my almost-non-existant skill? Also, is it particularly graphically intensive?
Well, the thing about NS2 is that while you can get better equipment as the marines, or evolve as higher life-forms as the aliens, it really comes down to how good you are as a player. I, for instance, pretty much suck as a marine, because I have absolutely terrible accuracy, and I'm terrible as an alien, because they rely on melee attacks and I suck at those, so I usually fall into a support role, either play as an alien Gorge, which lets you place little mini-buildings, or get a welder as a marine, and just work on base construction and healing my teammate's armor. If you wait, eventually they tend to have free weekends on Steam, so you can try it out with some other noobs, and it gets pretty fun.
Also, being the commander isn't actually all that hard, it's a
lot simpler than trying to play something like a RTS, particularly as the alien commander, because then you don't even have to work with your team, and you can deal with stuff on your own. When I first played, I avoided being the commander, thinking it was hard, until eventually I tried it because nobody was volunteering, and found I was actually better at that.
As for the graphics, you can make it pretty graphics intensive, but since I play on a lousy laptop, I turn down the graphics to absolute garbage, and it runs ok.
