I thought Magma melted buildings?
« on: June 10, 2008, 07:16:00 pm »

So, I was playing on a map with an exposed magma vent (infinite magma). I decided early on to build doors around the magma chamber to prevent imps from wandering into my base as I funnelled the magma.

Fast-forward 3 years, after a HFS seige, an epic failure, and an epic failure reclaim.

The magma has bubbled to the surface, filling up the crater.
The doors are made of Gabbro and Olivine.

They are now in contact with the magma and yet aren't melting.

I thought only bauxite/iron/steel/HF Metal buildings would resist magma? (IE: Mechanisms, etc)

I don't have temperature turned off, btw.

I figure it might have something to do with the fact that reclaimed fortresses start with everything forbidden.

Doors and floodgates and the like will withstand magma until they're opened, at which point they become unbuilt and may melt. Usually the first time a player finds out about this is when they use magma-unsafe mechanisms to try to control magma flows.

The only buildings I know of that are magma-melting are mechanisms and grates.

Magma has to occupy the same square as the building to burn/melt it.

Since doors block fluids from their square, it doesn't affect them until they open.

Bars, grates, floor hatches, mechanisms, open doors, floodgates, pumps, corkscrews, traps, levers, pressure plates, etcetcetcetc are affected when magma is in their square/on top of them.
