The same advice applies to Korea, kinda, because it neighbors Manchu. Only, being smaller, it's far easier to subjugate.

Pre-unpause update is coming shortly, once I've uploaded the pictures.

So here's how we start. Manchu to the north, seperating us from Ming, so the east. Ming's likely to start moving towards Russia via the various horde nations in the way, but they're the major player in the area. Across the Korean sea, we have Japan. Note that it's comprised of 5 factions - the emperor (red), the Shogun (blue) and 3 Daimyos (green, orange and yellow). The latter 4 are going to fight amongst each other, so we're going to take advantage of that, although each faction can field a larger army than we can, and if we go to war with Japan, we go to war with all of them.

Farther afield, there's a scattering of smaller countries. There's possibilities of conquest there, although nothing's guaranteed. Just to the south of this screenshot is Brunei, the big blue blob of the east. Their navy far outnumbers ours, but if we can change that, we have a good possibility of getting some land, since they don't have any forts.
Spoiler: South of Ming (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Our sliders (click to show/hide)
Korea is heavily centralised, which is good, since it means more money and less slider moves to westernise. We're also heavily aristocratic, giving bonuses to the rate at which we gain diplomats, the cost of cavalry, the shock stat of any generals we recruit and a slight lowering of regiment costs. Our high serfdom lowers the cost of stability, which is good, and the cost of infantry, also good, but raises the costs of other technologies, which is bad. I'll be leaving this one where it is until I don't have any more useful moves. We're right in the middle of Innovative/Narrowminded, giving no bonuses or maluses. Innovative lowers technology costs and raises stability costs, as well as lowers the missionary gain rate. Narrowminded increases the rate of missionary gain, while raising technology costs, decreasing stability costs and increasing colony growth rate. We need to be more innovative to westernise, but I'm going to be leaving this slider alone as well and relying on the first National Idea to move towards innovative. Mercantilism gives more spies and increases the chances of your merchants getting a spot in centres of trade you own, while decreasing trade range and the chances of merchants getting a spot in other centres of trade. Free trade is pretty much the opposite, and that's what I'll be pushing for. More trade = more money for technology. Offensive gives bonuses to the morale of your armies, and the shock stat of generals, and maluses to fort defense and cost of artillery. Defensive gives bonuses to the siege stat of generals and the cost of artillery, while giving a malus to moral of armies. I'll be going defensive, since having every general with a point in siege makes sieges go far faster. Land/Naval gives bonuses to forcelimits, morale and costs of the relevant area, while giving maluses to the cost of the other. I'll probably centre this one, then ignore it. Quality/Quantity does exactly what it sounds. I moved towards quality with the first slider move.

Once stability reaches its maximum of +3, I'll be investing fully in government technology. We'll fall behind everywhere else, but once we get to level 4, we'll be able to take our first national idea, which will gradually trigger events to move us towards innovative. After that, I'll probably stay fairly balanced, with trade tech being invested in less, since there isn't much opportunity to make money from it for now.

Malacca is in red because our trade range isn't high enough to reach it. This can be solved either by moving towards free trade or increasing our trade tech. I'll be sending merchants to Nanjing first, then Kyoto.

The king has average stats, A/D/M 5/5/5. His heir's a little better, but neither of them are good enough to westernise, which needs 6 admin skill. I hired the only 2 useful advisors we started with.

Long term goals:
-Westernise. We're relatively close, but we need a neighbour in the latin tech group.
-Conquer eastern Asia. - Might get tricky, unless Ming collapses.

Short term goals:
-Get some more land. We don't have enough to challenge any of the big boys yet.

EDIT: I'd spoiler the update, but it's not doing what I'm telling it to.

Our first mission is to increase the size of our army. I was going to do that anyway, so it's an easy one. We start with 3,000 infantry, and I recruit a few regiments to fill it out to 4,00 infantry and 3,000 cavalry. I also get royal marriages with Ming and Manchu, which should persuade them to avoid flattening us for a little longer. Mission 2 is to build a larger army than Minamoto, the Shogunate. This is entirely impossible for now, due to them having far more men and money than us. I cancel the mission, so we get a third - to accumulate 100 ducats. This is only a matter of time.

Januray sees the first Japanese pirate raid, in Pyeongan. It's irritating, and will contine, probably until we conquer Japan, but it means we can enact a descision in the province that slightly increases the defensiveness.
Spoiler: Bloody pirates (click to show/hide)
In June, our stability rises to +3, so I invest fully in government tech. It's goign to take just under 21 years at the current rate to get to the next level. 40% research rate sucks. I'm keeping an eye on Japan and Brunei, since they're most likely to yeild more land.

In March, 1402, the king falls ill. I chose the option that moves us a point towards aristocracy and lowers our stability rather than the option to decentralise.

In November, 1403, we get an event that gives us an excuse to go to war with Manchu, allowing us to demand the 3 provinces bordering us for less infamy. I declare war, and we lose 2 stability points, due to our having a royal marriage and our good relations. By May, we control a province while they're laying siege to one of ours with a much larger army. With a bit of luck, we can take enough provinces to demand the 3 that border us. Our king is a fairly poor general, with 1 fire, 2 shock, 1 maneuver and 1 siege skills. The siege point is highly useful, though.

The war drags on for 5 years, completely lacking in battles save for a few naval skirmishes. We get the 3 provinces we wanted, along with 12 ducats. This completes our mission to accumulate money. The new one is to have a larger army than Fujiwara, the purple Daimyo. Our infamy has risen to 6, and will fall by 0.5 a year, due to our king's diplomacy stat.
Spoiler: The post-war borders (click to show/hide)

Seems the Japanese were having fun too.
Taira (orange) have taken a beating, with Fujiwara coming on top. All 4 factions are now Daimyos, meaning a war for the Shogunate is inevitable.

In late 1409, our heir dies. Luckily, he had a brother. At 4/7/3, he's a great diplomat, but poor everything else. We also get our first rebels. It takes until May to destroy the army, at which point we complete our mission. Seems Fujiwara are at war with Tachibana, the green faction. Our new mission is to have a larger army than Manchu. It's not like it mattered in the last war, but oh well. In July, we get a second slider move. I move towards quality again. I also construct 3 carracks to boost our navy size.

I'd say that's a good start. 3 provinces in 9 years. Also, I say you finish off Manchu before going after any other places.

So far, taking out Manchu is nothing more than getting the opportunity to do so. A nice high diplomat ruler (8 or 9) would be perfect. Same with anyone else, apart from Ming, who probably have provinces with more manpower than Korea's starting provinces. I'm just hoping they collapse at some point so I can jump in and grab some land.

Hey, look at this. A third attempt to actually play an LP through. Shall I try again as Holland or Korea, or try someone else?

EDIT: I promise I'll get more than about 50 years through this time and update at least once a week. If I don't PM the hell out of me, please. Unless I haven't been online for a week, obviously.

Holland! Quite possibly one of the best nations to play, as you try to fend off Burgundy!

Hum... How about a random greek minor? I've never tried them before, so I'd like to see how screwed over they are with the Ottomans right at their doorstep. :P

Can't you continue the Korean LP?

Okay, by my count, Korea has 2 votes and Ukraine has 2. Problem with Ukraine is I can't release them, since Lithuania starts at war and in a PU (not sure of the PU actually matters, though). I might figure out a way to do it, if you really want, but Eastern Europe is only fun if Poland, Lithuania and Muscovy all fall apart, so you get an extra half dozen countries fighting in there.

EDIT: Does "random Greek minor" count Byzantium? If so, it's certainly possible to do excellently with them. Burgundy and Lithuania I've played very successfully, Holland I have a plan that probably won't work, I've never played Utrecht or Finland, but I suspect both would be tricky.
