Faerie Fortress? Bug?
« on: November 12, 2010, 03:16:22 pm »

So I asked this kid permission to sleep in their fortress. They said my reputation preceeded me and of course I could.
Instead of sleeping 'till Dawn, I just asked for the standard 8 hours, since somehow sleeping an entire 16 doesn't cure drowsiness as well when I say "sleep 'till Dawn".  But that isn't my bug. Nooo.

My bug is this: So I settle down int he keep, and wake up in the middle of the night, as expected.
OUTSIDE the fort walls. That part? Not expected.

EDIT: REPLICABLE! I went back inside, slept "till dawn" and woke up outside again.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

It would be far better if you woke up with all your clothes and items stolen. Heh.

Agreed. I think it was because it's an odd-sized fort. It is really skinny (and shows up as such on the travel map!)

I'm having the same thing in a regular-sized (3x3 on the travel map) fortress. Whenever I rest in the hall with the Lord in it, I end up outside of the walls. I always pick until dawn though.

I found a odd fort too, it's three wide on the map but several of the spaces around it or considered part of it even though they look like normal spaces.

Same issues here.  Almost always drowsy, and sleeping in one spot once woke me up in another spot.

I guess you have to ask for permission to sleep there first, otherwise they will "remove" you during your sleep? Not sure tho.

Nah, they wake you up and ask "can I help you" Maybe they were using you as a sacrifice for bogeymen?

To be clear, I did get permission. And was inside the keep.

Yeah, that's what I'm going with.

Is the fort/occupants displaying any other strange characteristics? Insane cackling, shapeshifting, taking off into the sky like Laputa?

I've slept in a house and woke up outside before. I dunno why it does that...

I'm guessing it's related to this:

Quote from: Aqizzar
After reading that story, I'm really curious what elements were "problems" that deserved being "fixed".  It wasn't Skinnyrends the Alligator of Ambition was it?

There's the being able to use the great axe with one hand (not fixed), a problem with the display of the labyrinth symbol (fixed), the alligator thinking that it should start in the keep because it was a site resident (not fixed)...  probably something with the wounds healing that weren't fixed, like my hips, which were really really messed up.  Taking away the guy's knife was clunky, since you still have to grab it and then step away instead of getting an explicit option to fight over it, and that hasn't changed.  I think I fixed a few other minor text things.
(Emphasis added, of course.)

I'm guessing that sleep takes you into some alternate metaphysical state, like the state in which alligators reside when there is no adventurer to watch them.  Then, once either you or the alligator become once again observed, the waveform collapses, and the location within the site is chosen anew.

Unfortunately for you (and the lord in that story), whatever settings or defaults are involved wind up putting you in the wrong place.  Can't wait until someone wakes up suspended in midair or over a body of water.

Well, my adventurer has been chewing on bogeymen a bit. I wouldn't be surprised.
