Thinking of starting a DF LP
« on: November 12, 2010, 02:49:26 pm »

Not sure where a thread like this would go, so I figured I would just put it here.

I've been seriously considering starting up a Dwarf Fortress Let's Play. Not on this site, but over on the Escapist, which is another website I frequent. I doubt I could make a LP without treading on ground that's been covered a dozen times on this site. One the main reasons I want to make the LP is to introduce more people to DF, and the Escapist is the ideal place for that since almost no one there plays it. Plus I won't be stepping on the other threads in the community stories section found here.

I was just wondering if there's anything important I should know before starting something like this. I am familiar with DF Let's Plays and Let's Plays in general, so I doubt I would screw it up majorly. But I figure someone here might have something important to tell me. If not, no harm in asking.

Beside the fact that adventurer mode could now add something to an LP, I cant realy think of anything. Maybe gloss over the story section for inspiration?

I make Grimlocke's History & Realism Mods. Its got poleaxes, sturdy joints and bloomeries. Now compatible with DF Revised!

Already have been doing that. I'm not trying to copy anyone, just trying to get a general feel for how a typical DF Let's Play should progress. One thing I do wonder though is generally how much artistic liberty you are allowed to take. I feel what makes DF LP entertaining and unique is that you can easily craft your own stories around the events of the game.

I was also wondering about how adventure would fare in a Let's Play. I think the biggest drawback to it is that even now all you can really do is kill stuff. Now there's definitely a very large diversity of things you can kill in increasingly amusing/horrific ways, but in the end it's still just killing. I think it would get old pretty quickly. But this isn't really an issue, since I was going to a standard fortress LP along with some community interaction in the form of voting to make people feel more involved.

The way I see it this will either work really well or turn into a big mess. Kind of like most forts.

The Escapist seems like a really good place to introduce DF. I assume this is a written LP, then? I think the best way to do an entertaining fort mode LP is to embark somewhere ridiculously dangerous. That's what makes community stories like Headshoots and Battlefailed so awesome.

Good luck by the way. ;)

Think of it like Sim City, except with rival mayors that seek to destroy your citizens by arming legions of homeless people and sending them to attack you.

Will the dusk of Townbrush work its way in somehow?

I vote for a nothing embark in a treeless desert.  You are allowed plants or an infinite surface watersource to survive until the first caravan.

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

Well I've already decided to embark on a terrifying ocean again. Mainly because I thought it was the best balance between my own personal understanding of the game and the potential for Fun!. Granted it (probably) won't contain as much bullshit as Townbrush because the Darnen have been smacked with the [DOES_NOT_EXIST] tag. However I still haven't perfected my idiotic fort design, so zombie whales bursting into the dining room could still be an issue. Plus the new ghost system could certainly make things interesting. I'm not hoping for the fort to go to hell or trying to make it do so, but I don't want to put in a place where nothing would happen.

Originally I was thinking about doing a traditional below ground fort, but figured that Dwarf Fortress is all about expressing your own creativity. So why not show of that you can build forts in completely different ways?

Only in obscure references. This is in a completley new world after all.

Well I'm about done with the introduction post. I figured I'd post it here to get some feed back on it and make sure I'm not omiting some important detail.

Spoiler: this is the post (click to show/hide)

Trying to describe Dwarf Fortress is actually way more difficult than I thought it would be. I'm probably going to think about that more and revise it, along with fixing all the grammatical errors I haven't noticed yet.

Nice start.  Since you mentioned fixing some grammer mistakes, may I refer you to the first line, where you described 'copious amounts wealth bloodshed.'

Did you mod blood to be made of gold, or do you mean wealth and bloodshed?  :p

Thanks, somehow I missed that even after revising it several times.

When you say "it certainly isn't for anyone", this says, to me, that no one should be playing it.  While this has an amusing ring of half-truth to it, you probably mean it isn't for everyone.

The only suggestion I can make would be to mention the epic dwarven fortress of Boatmurdered to your brave volunteers, if only to show them just how awesome and hilarious the game can be.
