Dwarf Fortress got a mention on Kotaku in their best free PC games article, even if their description of it kinda sucks.

To compare Df and minecraft is like to compare rock and pop music. Seriously.

Well minecraft was inspired by DF...

And I don't suppose comparing it to Minecraft is that far off.  Dungeon keeper and Minecraft are the two closest games to DF I can think of, and since he just mentioned minecraft it's only natural it would be what DF is compared to.  Besides the writer only had 3 lines of space to describe it.  DF does not fit into 3 lines of description very well.

Calling it PC gaming's best kept secret seems like the reviewer is pretty damn impressed by it to me, seems to be a good mention.

Dwarf Fortress is like a cross between Evil Genius (for the traps and rigging up your own personal death traps and what not), Dungeon Keeper, and StarTopia. Minecraft is more like its adventurer mode, done in first person.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

What, did you work for bullfrog or something?

WHERE THE HELL IS MY DK3???
But anyway, your ignoring adventure mode.

Saying 'DF is like game A + game B' usualy realy fails to describe the detail of DF.

To decribe minecraft from a DF perspective I would say minecraft is a VERY cut-down DF in 3D.

Other games realy dont sound very appealing form a DF perspective do they...

Dwarf Fortress is like a mixture of Dungeon Keeper, Lord of the Rings, Command Prompt and the entire universe. Only more complicated.

When done, DF is essentially a self-writing, procedurally generated fantasy novel.

Right now, it is a procedurally generated and dynamic relative of Dungeon Keeper, but also of countless RPGs and such (Adventure mode.

Then who's the Meta Knight of DF, huh?

It's true though. DF was actually starting to get some more mainstream attention before Minecraft took off and stole its thunder.

What exactly happened to make Minecraft so popular? Before I saw people talk about it around as much as Dwarf Fortress, then suddenly it was FUCK YEAH MINECRAFT!!!!!

No clue. Apparently there is an insane amount of joy to be found in having legos on your computer that you need to pay for.
