Dwarves starving, I have plenty of food
« on: September 16, 2006, 07:09:00 pm »

My dwarves seem to be getting hungry, even though I have about 150 food.

A good portion of that is plump helmets, and I'm not able to brew anything using the still, either.

Any thoughts?

My initial guesses:

Is your food storage inaccessible?  A locked door, perhaps?  Is the food in an actual food stockpile?  Is it queued up to be moved somewhere else?

I'm having the exact same problem as the OP, only my manager screen shows I have 524 prepaired food, though I can't find it while manually looking through the barrels.  This is a game from a reclaimed fortress.  I'm thinking its some sort of bug.  Like maybe some of the rotten food (from the last fortress) that was thrown out became counted as food, which is (naturally) inaccessible.

EDIT: they are so hungry they are breaking stuff

just to elaborate a bit on the previous poster: in reclaime mode you have to reclaime everything from the designation menu (keys [d]-[c]) to use it. If you have access to the "stocks" menu, you can also locate your food by pressing [TAB], selecting a food item and pressing [z]. If you have allready reclaimed the food and still suffer from your dwarves not finding it, it is most likely part of a hauling job to a barrel that is waiting for a free dwarve. Sadly those items won't be touched by your dwarves*, because they are allready marked for a job, and there's very little you can do about it but set more dwarves to food hauling.

* ceterum censeo: please make dwarves able to cancel those "inactive" jobs and take the item. This should solve lots of "item not found" and "site blocking" issues.

The food's definitely accessible, i even removed all of the doors and there are tons of plump helmets lying everywhere.  They just seem to ignore it.

There's food everywhere, it's just hanging out and not getting eaten.

That's propably the problem. Dwarves don't like the food lying around and try to put it into barrels. In game terms this translates to lots of "haule food to barrel/stockpiles" jobs being created. Each of those jobs reserves the food item, preventing the dwarves from eating it. Currently, the only way to deal with that kind of situation is to set lots of dwarves to food hauling, to ensure that the food gets into the barrels ASAP.

Create emergency food stockpiles under the plump helmets.  That may help, although they will still want them in barrels.
