Planting in mud, outside
« on: June 10, 2008, 05:21:00 pm »

I've found that in version 0.27.176.38c, I am unable to plant anything in mud I made outside. I'm on a half-mountain region, and I flooded some flint land outside, expecting to be able to plant in it. There are never any seeds available for that location. However, I can plant in the muddy grass I made nearby.

I flooded some rock inside "Muddy Phyllite Cavern Floor", and I can grow underground plants there. The outside terrain is "Muddy Dolomite" or "Muddy flint, and is marked as outside, light, and above ground.

Here are some screenshots:

Thanks,
Andy

Keep up the great work!

What kind of seeds do you have?  Some plants are really picky about where they grow: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/List_of_crops

To elaborate, if you're in a half-mountain region, your map has at least two different biomes.  Maybe one of those biomes is evil and the other isn't, or something like that?

I hadn't considered it being biome specific, but I can do a test regarding that. I am half mountain-half forest. Take a look at this screenshot.

See the plots on the left? I hollowed out the roof there, so those are actually outside. I can't plant anything in them. However, that's probably mountain biome as well.

Here are all my seeds: http://kortham.net/temp/mySeeds.png

Sorry to double post, neither of them are evil... I think they were both calm.

I figured it out by poking through the raws. There aren't any crops that can grow in the mountain biome, regardless of how muddy you make it. Thus this is probably not a bug, (although a plant or two in the mountains might be nice. *shrugs*

Thanks for your help!

What's that "duh" about?  If you mean about mountain biomes having no plants, I didn't know that either.  If it was about "probably not a bug," I think he was sarcastically understating it.

I think that this is the most useful post I've ever seen.

It's understandable that this could be misconstrued as a bug; I know lots of mountains on which plants grow...  But maybe I'm just crazy.
