Bridge construction issue
« on: September 16, 2006, 11:33:00 am »

1) Start building a bridge.  Wait until the dwarves have placed the materials (and maybe done the architecture) and it's waiting for masonry.

2) Cancel the bridge construction.

The materials for the bridge get split up, some on one side of the river, some on the other.  This means that trying to build using the materials on the other side will cause more "path not found" errors if you try to use them in further construction until/unless the pathfinding gets smart enough to realize it can't/shouldn't try to reach those materials.

Another side of it is that by doing this you put materials that were available into a place where they're not, and that this can't be undone without some effort.

not to mention the stuff on the other side will block the construction of another bridge in the same place... i think.

incidentally.. i've noticed that i get a huge lag (now that i've got around 70-80 dwarves) when bridge construction finishes (black screen actually for a little while) presumably updating new pathfinding?

Yeah, I need to give the building destroyer a direction in some contexts.

The lag from bridge building comes from some sloppy LOS code.  It is calculating the places that your dwarves can now see, slowly.

funny enough.. the bridge is in the middle of an area that's totally explored.. well it's a river bend that's obscured from the rest of the river.. with parts of the up and down stream already revealed by me digging up a nile forest up and down stream.

Yeah, part of the sloppiness is that it just rechecks everything.
