Haven't breached a cavern yet, although on arrival one did collapse. :/

AFAIK, cave vegies require an underground lake or river to be part of the cavern system. Possibly your first layer of fun does not have this requirement?

My advice: dig deeper! :D

So, what kind of spirits has everyone had?
I've seen the "haunts relatives" kind, and I've had one described as an "energetic poltergeist". Not quite sure what that one does.

Just started my first fortress in .17 on a pretty nifty location,
magmalake on the surface, plenty of trees to cut down, shrubs to collect, fish in the rivers a waterfall, also some alligators and hippos... and I got a rodent infestation.

(just took the standard outfit for an expedition) and my two cats are killing so many rats a patch near my entrance looks like a refuse zone...which it isnt...and there are still about twenty rats left.

Interesting, yet odd. Had not seen anything like this before '17.
Magma lake... On the surface?

Do you mean a volcano, or have new features been added to worldgen?

Ive only been playing this for a month or so and apart from playing a bit of 40d for the tutorial, I have only played .16.

Ive noticed that regular migrant waves now come in .17 as well as the larger yearly one.

I also had this greet me on my first embark, not sure if its new or not but couldnt find any references to it doing a forum search.

Again, may have been mentioned in the thread before, but due to the need to bury dwarves, the graveyard stockpile is now called "corpses".

: Hmm. maybe, it has a magmapipe all the way down.
It's just that I call magma features that don't include a big mountain of obsidian (and other igneous rocks) lakes. It is located on a highpoint and includes a -not so pretty- pilar of obsidian. (prob. due to the embark collapse)

Saw this on the DF wiki about ghost types:

"An energetic poltergeist."

Has anyone here had that? What do they do? Pull levers and throw items lying around at dwarves to cause throwing damage?

Sneaking skill actually works this version. I managed to sneak into va camp and steal all of their stuff without getting caught.

Ghosts should appear for dead pets too, that would fit well because you can also bury pets in coffins. Do they?
