I just noticed the [CHASM], [MAGMA_POOL], and [PIT] tags in the list of changes. Are the old chasms back in?

I can't see them in the list.

My fort that never had any problems in .16 crashed a few minutes after I moved it to .17. Take warning and back up your saves.

what happens when you atom-smash the spook itself? is it immune? does it vanish?

Argh, I didn't even think of that. It would be quite hard to do, because the thing buzzes about through the ground and air and suchlike. On the one hand, it doesn't interact with anything physical like terrain or wildlife, but on the other hand, it does show up on the units screen, which should be enough to make it smashable.

Hmmm, interesting. Yes, you can choose a dwarf to honour and they turn into "memorials" rather than "slabs". Some of them "loved alunite" or were a "lover of leather armour" or whatever, others are blank.

I've uprooted all my coffins hoping to get ghosts back. I'll start atom-smashing my population now.

I did a couple more and got

"Lover of crundle horn"
"Slayer of Dodok Dreamyglances/Lover of Turquise"

I think it picks something out of their personality to mention.

I guess my fallen miner liked silver, so they said he's been re-united with silver in the next life.

Solution:
1) Pick migrant.
2) Take screenshot of his/her description page.
3) Kill migrant.
4) Engrave slab.
5) Compare engraving to prefs from step 2.
6) Profit!

On a happier note, I now intend to give at least one dwarf the custom profession "Mortuary Dwarf" and have him do nothing except make coffins/sarcophagi and tombstones.

You can still look at the personalities of dead dwarves, you know. They do match their gravestones.

Awww, those engravings are sweet.

On a happier note, I now intend to give at least one dwarf the custom profession "Mortuary Dwarf" and have him do nothing except make coffins/sarcophagi and tombstones.

Make him the only dwarf with burial enabled, too.  I would say restrict him to the grave area via burrows too but that would probably prevent him from getting bodies.

That's actually a neat addition. Though I imagine it will lead to some silly engravings based on the preferences of your Dead Dwarf.

Aha. In that case it sounds like a synonym mixup. "United" makes sense if it's talking about two lovers. Silver and fleshballs? Less. Though, this *is* Dwarf Fortress.

Ok, Datan had a memorial slab up and did not return as a ghost.

Sakrost I laid to rest in a normal coffin then disinterred and has not yet come back.

Case study:
Tun the ghostly miner is currently haunting my map.
I have a memorial slab with his name on it.
I build the memorial slab.
The moment it is constructed, "Tun Keshshackdoren, Ghostly Miner has been put to rest."
I've now uprooted it again to see what will happen.

Other notes
- Feb, my other miner, was encased in ice and now seems to be haunting the pool where it happened.
- I just crushed ten migrants and a dog under a bridge. Observations continue. The crushings occured between 2 Felsite and 6 Felsite. I want to see if they all arrive back on this plane en masse, or what. Ghost fortress is going to be so fun.

EDIT: The hell? I just started a new embark to test some stuff and a cat appears to have drowned for no reason. Also there are several dead fish and piles of sea jellyfish remains washing up on shore. I don't get what's going on.
