ANOTHER Trading Problem
« on: June 10, 2008, 01:14:00 am »

I made the trading depot out of bauxite, and a peasant wandered over to trade. However, There are no prices ANYWHERE on the trading screen. When i entered the screen, The Peasant immediately became a "trader" I Do have the save game now, i just need a place to send it, as well as instructions on how to do so.

Just to be sure it wasn't' the peasant that was bugged, I had my broker hop on over, and I had the same issue. I can make trades, but there is no way I can check about the variable prices between all of the items. I will unzip another Dwarf Fortress in a different folder and start a new game to see if there is anythign else I can do about it.

Please keep in mind that I'm using mike Mayday's Tileset.

Edit: Before i forget, I increased my size from the default setting, If that matters.

OKay, I found the issue. This "bug" results from me not having a broker with an "appraisal" Skill. Now, i'm all for improving skills, but this one makes the game near impossible unless there is some magic way of giving them appraisal skill mid game. I'm not able to do ANY trading (well, i am, but its a VERY big stab in the dark.)

Would you mind making "appraising" a default skill for broker dwarves, and at the very least, give us an easy way of giving it to dwarves who don't have it?

Or, even give give it to all dwarves by default?

Just do some trading and I think your dwarf in the Depot will gain the skill.

To hijack a thread, I've got a depot without the top two orders available (bring goods to depot and... I forget) It happened when the avant garde of a human caravan arrived, started unloading goods, and then left when the tail-end got slaughtered by an appealingly timed siege.
Should I be worried, or should it sort itself out next time I can trade (I can still summon and presumably use a broker)?

Appraisal is trained by trading, and pretty quickly at that. You only need novice skill to see prices, though, so it's worth having one dwarf with Novice level when you embark. Otherwise, your first trade or two will be tricky, but from then on you should be able to see prices.

Definitely not a bug.

If a caravan gets attacked, some of them will still arrive at the depot but they will be unwilling to trade with you.  They are in the process of packing up their stuff and running away.  When no trading is possible you won't see the top two options.  It's not a bug as far as I know; in my experience the options always come back when a caravan actually makes it to trade.

Actually, the fact that the computer, by default, wont' buy one might be.  If you just embark, you'll find that you'll have no way to easily trade at first. This would be REALLY difficutl for a new player.

This wouldn't be Dwarf Fortress without it being really difficult at first for a new player.

SimRoberts, sir, might I suggest you start researching stuff before you go blindly submitting bug reports?

I haven't tried this myself but why not just trade 1 item a bunch of times with the same caravan? Wouldn't that level up your brokers skill pretty quickly so you could see prices?

Brokers level by seeing items at the trade depot, not by actually trading. I suppose it might work to trade your items for the trader's items, then mark the trader's items for trade and trade them back to the trader, but I don't think you can trade again for items that you've given the trader, so there's a limit to how long you can milk that for experience. You'd presumably be best off trading lots of cheap items than a few expensive ones, though.
