5th Limestone, 99

Shouts rang out from deep beneath the earth.  The guards smiled and slapped their maces into the palms of their gauntleted hands.  "Sounds like a riot down there," the fat one on the left smiled.
"Sure does..." a well-muscled dwarf pulled at her beard, "time to move in?"
"Not yet," the fat one cautioned. "Let them work their way up a bit.  Give 'em a taste of freedom before smashing their poor heads in."

7th Limestone, 99
Fikod Konsigun sat on her throne, head in her hands.  There were simply too many of them.. too many who constantly defied her.  Was she not queen?  Were her wishes not to be followed at all times?  She was sick of the mewling rabble pleading to her.  "Sovereign, we have no zinc! I cannot make you a statue..." "Sovereign, I am a humble soapmaker! How was I to create a buckler for your eminence?!"

The husbands and wives were equally bad.  "How dare you sentence my husband to a hammering! He did nothing wrong!" they would scream as they leaped, frothing and raving, at her royal personage.  The graffiti was getting out of hand, too.  All those beautiful engravings of her ascendancy to queen of the mountanhome being defiled... it was enough to drive any queen mad.

There was only one thing to do.. "Guard," Queen Konsigun called out to her waiting attendants.  "Fetch me one of the wardens.  We need to expand..."

1 Granite, 100

Warden Dreamglazed cursed as the horse's legs trembled and gave out.  She gave a confident look around, and nodded to her guards.  "Close enough is good enough, fellows.  We strike earth here.  Get the prisoners out and started working, there's much to do before nightfall.  The guards looked around in trepidation.  "B..b..but we saw skeletons walking about the other night! This is no place to settle down, Warden, please! There must be another way!"  Warden Dreamglazed hopped down from the wagon and pointed at the gasping, wheezing horse.  "He can't go any farther.  There's nothing trying to kill us right this second.  Here's as good a place as any.  Now get digging, we've got to secure the prisoners as quickly as possible.

Derm:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Right now more of a woodchopper than a soulchopper, but we'll get there.

17th Granite - Warden Dreamglazed

The guards are busy digging out the cells for our current prisoners; Armok knows the fiends can't be trusted with anything that could be considered a weapon.  The prisoners are all huddling about the wagon still, like the pieces of wood are a bastion of safety in this cursed place.  I've put Derm to work cutting logs for now - he shot me a dirty look and mentioned something about how his axe is meant to slay dragons, not menial labor.  I told him if any of the prisoners make a break for it, he's free to cut them down.

19th Granite - Love Machine

Months of travel and we stop here, in the middle of this forest.  The warden says to take a good look around; this is the last home we'll ever see.  She's a heartless one, and a lackey of the useless nobility.  The warden laughed as she chucked me in the newly-dug cell and told me to construct a workshop, then ordered me to start churning out doors.  Doors to my own prison cell...

A woman who likes earrings: there's a novelty.

This is sounding like an incredibly cruel place already.  I like it!

10th Slate - Warden Dreamglazed

"Do you understand your duties here, Prisoner 301?" I barked at the wiry dwarf.  Prisoner 301, his hair neatly combed and teeth glistening white smiled uncannily at me, his eyes unnaturally wide.  "I said do you understand?"
"Oh yes, Warden, I understand you perfectly," Prisoner 301 replied in glib tones, the eerie smile never leaving his face.  "I am to stay in this still soggy cell and oversee the production of plump helmets."
"Exactly." I narrowed my eyes at the thin dwarf and still he just smiled at me.  By the good Queen's arms, why didn't I think of asking for my charges' rap sheets?  What could this one have done to merit being sent so far away? He didn't look to pose any threat, not with his lean build.  And in all my years, I've rarely seen a prisoner take such good care of his hair... neatly combed, slicked back and a bit to the side... yeah, this one deserved watching.

I left Prisoner 301 to his new garden, and I could hear him humming a strange song, just under his breath as I closed his door.  Derm sidled up to me, a knowing grin crossing his features.  "What now, Derm.  Find any dragons to slay yet?"
"Not yet," Derm said, lovingly stroking the head of his axe. "Not yet"

I'd like to request a dwarf too.
Chief medic or an ordinary other doctor if possible.
Some kindhearted chap to help those in need.
Even convicts need to be healed, especially the ones that couldn't fulfill Noble's demand.

16th Hematite - Warden Dreamglazed

We've the other farms up and running now - Quarry bushes, cave wheat and sweet pods in addition to Prisoner 301's plump helmet farm.  He actually asked if he could look after the other farms in addition to his plot, at least until we get the next batch of prisoners from Mountainhome.  I didn't see any harm in his request, so I granted it.  We'll at least have food for the compound, and once we start growing, Armok knows we'll need it.

The guards have discovered plenty of coal, lignite and magnetite, so as soon as we have the manpower, I'm planning on getting an armory set up.  There's skeletal groundhogs on our side of the river, skeletal deer across the river and skeletal carp *in* the river... I'd just feel a lot safer if Derm wasn't the only one with an axe.  Speaking of which, he's become awfully particular about his room. Ordered prisoner 201 to make an extra door for him - don't know why he'd need it.

3rd Galena - Warden Dreamglazed

Three new souls for the fort - one guard, one doc and one prisoner.  The guard's a useless sod, some poor, quivering lump who doesn't look like she knows the right end of a truncheon to hold.  The prisoner, who've I've designated 401, at least is a useful sort, knows his way about a furnace from the look of him.  Looks like I'll get my forges running after all! The Doc is useful at least, we've got basic medical facilities running so Derm can tangle with the skeletal deer all he likes.  I'll see if I can't convince him to wait for some armor at least.  Last thing the doc wants to treat is a hoof through the skull.

Prisoner 301 is getting on my nerves again. I caught him in the dining hall talking to some of the guards. Don't know what he was doing out of his cell.  If I catch him down in the officer's quarters, I'll string him up for the skeletal deer.

New arrivals

17th Sandstone - Warden Dreamglazed

I'm suspicious.  Things aren't working out as well as all my projections planned.  The men tell me we're running low on food, but I looked at the stockpile and it's quite full.  The prisoners must be doing something to sabotage our stocks! That's the only answer...

18th Sandstone - Warden Dreamglazed

Did some digging.  Found out prisoner 301 has an illegal still set up in his workshop and has been brewing away our plump helmets.  If he's so eager for kitchen duty, he'll get kitchen duty.  Told him to lay off the plump helmets, though, we need to eat them for a bit still.

18th Sandstone - Guard Ingish Weakendringed

The warden has locked herself away in her office with a thick sheaf of paper.  Says we're all mismanaging her prison and she won't stop until she's accounted for every crumb the prisoners have to eat.  I've managed to sneak some time away, and I noticed poor Love Machine chained to the mason's workshop, cranking out doors.  We chatted for a bit, and she really is a nice lass.  She says she's innocent of whatever the Queen accused her of that landed her here.  She pleaded with me to send a message back to her family in the Mountainhome, let them know she was alive and all right.  I suppose I could send a message along with the traders that are bound to show up here soon, but I know the Warden wouldn't like it.  Still, could it hurt anything?

Can I get in please? My first one of these!

Fingers McShifty, craftsdwarf/mechanic and black marketeer. Caught supplying dodgy merchandise one too many times and exiled to Kudarteskom.

Suspicious and generally elflike. Is that even a real beard?
