a quick damming question
« on: November 10, 2010, 02:48:59 pm »

Hi! I've been considering damming a river at my current fort to delay fps death for another year or two. I read the damming article on magmawiki so the technicalities of doing that are all resolved.

However, I was wondering if there are any repercussions to damming a river. My embark does not have a waterfall, but will I somehow cause an epic flood somewhere else on the world map if I dam it? Are there any other downsides to damming a river that the article might have omitted?

You only need to divert the water long enough to block off the water with something like a drawbridge or constructed wall. Once that is done you don't need to divert the water anymore.

Water won't go up over anything if it didn't already go down. With your dam the river just sits still, despite how little sense that makes.
