No, actually, I don't think ironic racism is supposed to be part of the Bay12 Charm.

Hmm, you do have an excellent point, although the main point of my ... point was the general silliness and not that particular post.

Wow it only took 12 posts to prove the OP wrong.   Great work.

12 posts for Bay12!

Also, I resent that.

EDIT: Or are you counting the OP?

The truth of a sin is inherent truth; but recognizing the sin and calling it out is proving it as such.

Ergo, the recognition of being 'too far' is proof that the forum is not, as a whole, mature.

Not to mention B12 community doesn't DDoS the dev.
At least not yet.

That was an accident, we swear!

Is it really that hard to be better than the Minecraft forums?  I've heard bad things about them, although that's mostly been from these forums, and I'm sure a game that makes griefing other players as easy as minecraft does would attract a lot of immaturity.  I've never been on them though, and I have to admit that it seems like it might be exaggerated.

For example, before I came here, back when I still played WoW, I would frequent the WoW OT forums.  It was fairly common for people to discuss the immaturity of the General and OT forums, and to say that the OT was immature, but not nearly as bad as 4chan.  But I've heard from people who go to 4chan that outside of /b/ it's not nearly as bad as people say.  And on the OT itself, most of the regular people were fairly smart and mature most of the time, but tended to act like idiots in threads where that was already going on.  If most of the topics are immature, but the same people are capable of being mature in other threads, does that mean they're still immature?

Actually, it was just most of the people I talked to.  Eventually people figured out that there were distinct day/night groups, and the day group was far more immature than the night group.

I have been playing Minecraft for a while (about a year or so, I think) and followed Notch's blog, and the community used to be intelligent, mature, and gave good feedback and suggestions. It all started when Minecraft was advertised on Steam. Sure, that brought in a lot of new players and revenue, but it also brought in a lot of whingey, (self-conceived) entitled, arrogant douchebags that flooded every Minecraft-related board/blog with "i pay 4 game why u not updat dis mai game i pay 4 it make update nao", failing to realise that they paid for an Alpha testing and not a completed game, and even if it was the full game it is no excuse because they would complain if he went more than 12 hours without posting an update.

Even if this game become extremely popular, I highly doubt the community will get that bad, mainly because the game is complex enough that the idiots don't stay long.

Never really understood the logic of "lets ddos the sole game dev that lives in sweden and has millions of dollars with no legal obligation to finish" but thats just me.

However I do attribute this games difficulty curve to the general forum civility. Not that the game itself is particularly hard to pickup, its mostly takes patience and the ability to accecpt that the game isn't going to hand everything to you on a +silver platter+. It tends to lend to less disscusion about "Me" and more discussion about things like the grand unified elven treeconomic theory.
It also may have something to do with the fact that in game we exist as a dissembodied guiding hand and the dwarves quite regularly ignore us. Spending a lot of time in an outside perseptive can make you view things/think differently about situations.

The sheer audacity of it is why it's still mentioned. For this reason:

Never really understood the logic of "lets ddos the sole game dev that lives in sweden and has millions of dollars with no legal obligation to finish" but thats just me.

Also, we DDOS'd Toady before. That was the best April Fool's Day in recent memory. It wasn't even intentional.

If that game had half as many ore types as DF has, exploration mining would actually be fun.
I dont want it to have more mineral types per se, just navigable geology. When you go hunting for iron, or Diamond, it seems to be crap shot.

It's all part of the Bay 12 charm. Had this started out as an immature thread, it would be deep into metaphysical discussion of, .... something, by now.
Cats, magma, bridges, FBs, cage traps, and a GCS.
