Poll of Dwarf Entrance
« on: November 09, 2010, 08:09:31 pm »

The map I have has a plateau with a magma pipe next to it. I am planning on digging a Moria/Undergrotto style underground castle. However, before I start digging, I need to know: do I build my gatehouse (two big towers with a gate inbetween), with the gate over the volcano, or do I carve it from rock?

Please help.

Also: map has sand, flux and iron (so let the ideas roll)

Thanks,
TGL

n x 4 x h wall (n wide, 4 deep, h high) made of green (bonus points for clear) glass with 4x4xh+3 hollow steel towers every x tiles across the volcano.  make a cotton candy bridge (or something cheap like steel or platinum or gold or aluminum) over the magma.

Hm... Steel towers. I think I may do something like that...

But as for my sig, 1) crocodiles can't swim in magma, 2) creatures falling into the magma would fall right into the magma sea without fail.

Well what you could do then, just for the sheer audacity of it, is build a regular water moat filled with crocs INSIDE a magma moat.

If you dig a deep enough pit and fit it with magma it will be similar enough to a volcano. Not like the molten red stuff cools down in this game.

You could make a moat entirely of crocodiles, no liquid.

Over a volcano? I'd say build it in a volcano.

I am going to use the entrance over magma. However, the enemies then have to follow the path onto my bridge which has (technically "will have") a 10 z-level drop into magma.

For one of my megaprojects I built a two 12x12, 6-story towers out of solid gold.  These bookended a set of three 4-story 5x8 marble towers with a walkway between them, and all of it sat on top of a pair of (I think) 5x10 marble bridges.  Of course, I built 10 or 11 total of those gold towers between the three embarks the accompanying wall covered, and about 17,000 more marble blocks on top of that...  but even so.

Don't get so focused on the gate that you forget to make what it's guarding impressive as well.

Q: What do you get when you take 100 clear glass windows, 1000 silver bars, 6700 gold bars, and 18,000 marble blocks?

A: A very large wall.
