How to Raise Happiness
« on: November 09, 2010, 07:40:51 pm »

How do I increase the happiness of my fortress's people? One of my miners caused a couple of cave-ins, one of which killed one of his friends (the other miner). He is injured and very unhappy.
...So, yeah. How do I make him happier? (Oh, and anyone else who was the dead guy's friend.)

Give them a nice bedroom with a statue to admire. Sleeping in a good bed gives a happy thought, and admiring a tastefully arranged statue gives another happy thought. If you've got a great mason, you could have him churn out high-quality doors for them to admire as they come and go as well. Also, eating and drinking good food cheers them up.

If you don't already have a Great dining room, get one. Just throw down a dolomite floor, a bunch of tables and chairs and statues and your dwarves will be really happy to eat there.

If you need a more immediate solution while constructing this, assigning a pet can work. If it doesn't work, then a wardog can at least intervene when they go berserk.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. DID YOU JUST CAUSE ANOTHER CAVE IN?!?!
Great, now he's miserable; the warlord and a glassmaker got knocked unconscious; a bull got three of his legs broken and his left horn broken off; Oh, yeah, he also broke several bones. With no medical care to speak of, I guess he's dead.

1- Find a cluster of magnetite (preferably with a gold vein running through it) or a layer of obsidian (or cast an area of obsidian ;) )
2- Smooth and engrave every surface in the room
3- Place masterfully crafted gold tables in the room.
4- Place statues every third tile around the room
5- Hook up a mist generator so it drops the water on the statues
6- Repeat for each bedroom (misting is optional for this step)

1-No such luck.
2-I'm playing humans; little surfaces to engrave.
3-No gold.
4-I'm trying to make statues!
5-I'd try, but there is no river, aquifier, or anything like that.
6-N/A

Thanks for the suggestions, though.

1-  any stone works.  If not, then build out of more valuable stone blocks.
2-  see above.  If you cant engrave, use blocks
3-  use the most valuable material you have in abundance.
4-  you dont need tons, a few will work
5-  you only need one tile of 7/7 water in the mist system to fill the room
6-  just make nice bedrooms.

Just fyi, I don't know if this is why you've been getting cave-ins, but digging ramps under trees causes cave-ins. Make sure all the adult trees are chopped before you start digging the surface away.

No, it's because my miners channel the ground closest to the hillside first, causing the remainder to fall into the previously-mined parts of the hill.

Your only hope for water is the caverns if there isn't any on the surface or an aquifer.

Make sure you are converting all your food into lavish meals, thats a big boost along with a dedicated high quality brewer, a large enough dining hall tends to count as legendary even without all the smooth stone or engravings.  If a dwarf gets all his relatives killed and starts slipping towards very unhappy, assigning a war dog to him often gives him enough time to get a legendary meal and chill in the dining hall.  I do the dog thing once in awhile for my military while they are making the transition from civilian to supersoldier and never get to see the inside of the dining hall.
