Migrants~ Which do you prefer?
« on: November 09, 2010, 02:12:26 pm »

Standard topic, just wondering, which type of migrants groups do you prefer? Occasional (once a year or two years) groups of 20 migrants? Or lots (twice a season, maybe) of up to 5 dwarfs?

I'd prefer the second one, so I don't get overwhelmed and say "Fuck it, you're all military now."

I would like to see family size immigrant waves. Dad's a farmer with some brewery, Mom's a tanner with butchery, and they have two children, a cat, a dog and a horse. And maybe they have a hired hand who is a fighter-3, milker. And if you do good export-wise and earn a big wave, they bring their friends George and Michelle with them.

So the total wave size is somewhere between 1~6 dwarves plus children and animals, with 6 being hard-earned and two being more typical.

Seems like this would increase the number of immigrant children.  And I hate children.

Big pack of migrants. I don't want to micromanage new dwarves regularly, but only once or twice a year, once and for all. That's how my fortress seems to be working, too.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

I prefer numerous small groups, mainly (in theory) because a steady trickle of new blood is easier to manage than seasonal floods of gore.

Smaller immigrant groups don't put such a strain on my miners' ability to mine out more rooms instead of the winding tunnels and such. I put a couple bedrooms way in the back of my fort because that's where my miners were digging.

This.
Also, easier to designate labours that I want on the newcomers when they're few.

Same here.
Most of my dwarves live in dorms and there's usually more than enough room for new arrivals. If I need more room and the miners are dead or busy I just plonk some beds down in an empty ore vein. That keeps the migrants until new rooms are dug.

I didn't expect to get so many votes so fast.

I guess Toady could take a look at the coding and see if he can give an option to choose between the two, eh? Keep everyone happy.

Since the "Smallers" outvote the "Biggers" (wut) by 2 to 1, I guess small could be the default?

Of course, other things come first, but hey!~ Who knows what he'll do.

Small groups interrupt the pacing a lot less I think. Even if they come more often, I don't get bored going through Dwarf Therapist checking to see which professions I need and which I already have, which is very nice.

Having available dorm space really makes this question matter less; I could deal with either way pretty much the same. If I decide to carve living space, something useful always falls out of the walls, if I decide to follow veins instead, then the space left behind can hold temporary housing. Until I get around to placing them in jobs, they're still welcome as extra haulers.

Is there any reason why a setting can't be placed in the init file with the option to chose?

For example two options, how often migrants will make the journey. Whether it is twice a season or once a year.

Second, how many dwarfs will be in each set. Maybe an minimum and maximum value that you can set.

Whether it is twice a season or once a year.
If they came that often, I forsee security issues. In that light, a big annual group would be a lot simpler to shepherd, and would tie up the military less often.

Smaller groups. Make for less of a bad reputation if they *do* accidentally step in a puddle of magma, or get shot by a stray ballista bolt.

Or a spontaneous congregation of ambushers.
