Axedwarf jumped in lava during combat
« on: September 15, 2006, 08:10:00 am »

This may be a bug, I'm not sure.

Two of my axedwarves were fighting a magmaman, and generally kicking its butt.  It had already lost a hand, and was retreating.  It stepped over one square of lava, and the axedwarf stepped up next to it.  The next moment, the dwarf fell in the lava AND beheaded the magma man.

So, as far as I can figure, there isn't another way for this to have happened other than for the axedwarf to have charged the magma man.  I mean, if the magma man had somehow pulled him in, the magma man wouldn't have been beheaded, right?  Anyway, I know that in Adventure Mode, charging is a combat option.  So, shouldn't the axedwarf realize that dangerous ground precludes charging as a combat option?

This is normal. Your dwarves are moronic little twits just like everyone elses dwarves.

I suspect it's something about the conjunction of the pathing code and the combat code. I've seen dogs chase lizardmen into the river, dogs and dwarves chase batmen into the chasm, other similar stunts.

For giggles you can build a narrow bridge right next to an aqueduct. Your dwarves will use the aqueduct as a bridge even when there's water in it. I even had a really stupid little bugger drown in there. He just walked right into it and flashed around in confusion untill he died. I'm just glad he didn't breed, I don;t need that sort of stupidity in my fort.

Yeah, they don't care about terrain when charging or dodging.  You can set these for yourself in adventure mode in [c], but for now you just get/have to watch the dwarves die.

Just came by to mention that as long as you have the default combat settings in adventure mode this can happen as well.
I just lost my multiple legendary dwarf warrior in adventure mode (with full adamantium equipment from a "too deep"-ed fortress) due to this. I was searching a cave which had a chasm through it. I walked over to fight a batman next to the chasm, and my character apparently decided it would be a good idea to dodge -into- the chasm.

Ouch. Not a fun way to lose a character who was carrying the culmination of the best equipment from an old fortress.  :(

Ah well, it was on old world anyway from several versions back and I was already planning on ditching it for a newly generated one. I was looking for a dragon or hydra or some such to die a noble death anyway, I just didn't go out the way I was hoping.

The dwarf puffed on his pipe. "It is a glory hole, laddie. When my people mined this area, we fashioned many such areas."

List of stuns my dwarves pulled off so far:

-Running(yes, running, not being knocked) about 3 squares into the chasm before falling.

-Beign knocked 4 squares by a racoon.

-Countless dodges/charges into the chasm, why oh why don't i ever nuke that place?

-Walking across the entire magma flow with only 2 red feet and 4 yellow leg parts in the end and then proceeding to crawl arround, torching bystanders as they go.

-Melachonic dwarves trying to drown themselves, being swept downsteam onto a bridge, climbing out, running to the spot where they jumped, jump again, get swept on bridge again............she got attacked by a frogman doing so, was injured, moved to a bed and lived for another 5 years untill she got burned by the idiot above.

-chasing magma men to impossible positions like impassable tiles of the forge(not the forge tile itself)

I have this image of a dwarf Wile E. Coyote...

Anyway, don't forget that you can pave over the chasm and river no problem.  Paving over magma is much costlier, since you need steel, but there's no reason not to spend the few rocks necessary to create an absolutely massive bridge over the chasm & river that ensures that your dwarves are never anywhere close to the edge.  Even better, make it multiple adjacent bridges, so they can't be destroyed all at once.

Biggest bridge you can make is 10x10, so you'd have lots of bridges either way.

They take forever to build though.
