Dwarves go to prison TO DIE
« on: September 15, 2006, 02:39:00 am »

When a dwarf is sent to prison for a crime, they continue to stay in prison even after they have served their time.

They are not still caged, they freely wander the prison ground, but they refuse to leave until they've gone mad from hunger, or have starved.

Is this a known bug? It's happened to several dwarves already, including a legendary jeweler.  :(

IMHO the dwarf was alredy disturbed before going to jail, jailing only gave him a bit more lifetime... then, after releasing and the "be free" happiness bonus expired got melancholy and let himself die.

I know I've had this happen with dwarves who had no prior history of melancholy, madness, or unhappiness (just was a scapegoat for a noble).

Were they stuck with a job they weren't doing (like eat/drink)?  On a chain?  Stricken by a mood during jail time?

Some did have the eat task. None were on a chain, they were actually wandering around the jail. None had moods until they went nuts from starvation.

After they went crazy, they had no problems leaving the jail and walking around.

I'm having this same problem.  The dwarf had Drink listed as his job.  The game seemed to think he was still chained up, but removing the chain didn't free him.

Same for me - stuck on Drink, with an empty bucket next to him. I've tried drafting and undrafting him, didn't solve the problem.
After serving 75 days for not being able to make 3 items from the single red diamond I've found so far. Too bad.
If no one's found a way to work around that one, I guess he'll be a dead dwarf soon.

The title got me thinking.. Are dwarves in favour of or against the death penalty?

Ideally, it'd be up to you. To some extent it is, because there's a variety of ways you can choose to execute those that displease you. I've never tried it, but I've always wanted to build a jail filled with only restrains and channels linked up to magma, (thereby assuring a magma flood would kill anyone inside but leave the restrains unharmed.)

Quoted from the game manual:

"Particuarly egregious crimes are punished by execution. Typically, an execution is a sentance of 50 to 100 hammerstrikes. If the condemned dwarf somehow survives, no further punishment is carried out and the dwarf can rejoin society to the extent that they are able.

This is never known to have occurred."

Dwarves are often very Tired from their sentences. Be sure to single-detail the jail's floor so they can immediately crash after they're released.

Also, the best way to face physical punishment is to recruit the punishee and make him wear plate mail.

Well this seems a proper place to tack this on. Im running 0.21.104.21b (from the 16th).

The Mayor sentenced the Manager to jail time for a production violation. At the end of his sentence the Manager was hungry/thirsty/tired and had a job to drink.

However the Manager would not move from the square he was on. After a few minutes I built a statue under him and he stepped aside one tile, and remained there. Still hungry/tired/thirsty and job to drink. So I check the jobs list for any water carriers. None were related to the manager. I then removed the statue and built a well under the Manager hoping to bring the water to him. That finally dislodged him from his trance and he headed for one of my wells about 30-50 steps away. He arrived and proceeded to drink, and drink, and drink. His thirst note on the wound page was gone for a few minutes but he was still at the well drinking. At this point he is red starving and still drinking. I had to deconstruct the well to break him out of the job. Then he happily grabbed a favorite meal and wandered off to resume his life.

Would be nice if there were someway to "reset" the nobles when they get stuck like this. For the rest of the dwarves you can get by this with the army/squad activation.

Similar situation here with the latest build. I had a missed quota. They threw my legendary engraver in jail for a missed masonry build mandate (he had masonry disabled so that seems a bit unfair). he served his term and he is currently free but won't leave jail. His personal info says he is happy to be free but is also thirsty and hungry and won't move.

Matt, try activating his squad since hes not a noble. Otherwise you can try what I did to the noble I had stuck. Good luck.

I had the same situation with a legendary jeweler. He served his time in jail, and people would bring him water/food when he was thirsty/hungry. He got stuck on a "Sleep" job but wasn't able to sleep. My jail was single-smoothed on the floor. Eventually he died of dehydration because nobody brought him water in his "sleepy" state.

I tried activating him and deactivating a few times, but this didn't help.
