So, I chose to tear off the keys of my keyboard...
« on: November 08, 2010, 12:13:15 am »

Now, how do I clean the inside? It's disgusting. Should I use a can of compressed air?

I hope you can put the keys back on, some keyboards (like built in keyboards for laptops) aren't designed to allow the keys to be easily taken off and put back on.

As for cleaning, wipe it out?

I use water, screwdriver, and a vacuum cleaner. Works wonders.

Q-tips, rubbing alcohol.

I tend to use toothpicks or any other small, thin object that can fit between the keys without taking them off. But you're already past that point.

Nikov's plan works best, especially if you spilled something sticky on it.

If it's really bad, you can soak the keyboard itself in rubbing alcohol, although that isn't reccomended due to the sheer amount you need for that. That's how we always used to get the excess flux off circut boards when I was working with electronics.

Depending on the keyboard, you might be able to throw it in the dishwasher. 100% serious. Not all keyboards are made to withstand it though (especially more expensive ones, anything with lights or LCD screens) but I had a keyboard I used for years that I washed like that. Just have to wait for it to dry (like most electronics).

Like, with dishwasher detergent and everything? Or just rinse cycle?

That would actually be incredibly awesome.

Too bad you can't do that with a whole laptop, HA!

And no I'm not so stupid as to attempt that. However, with an old laptop that I wouldn't care if it functions anymore, maybe.

With detergent, yeah. To be fair, it was a relatively older (tougher, and a bit heavy) keyboard, made of a bit sterner stuff than most of the cheap plastic ones today, although I believe I could do it with my current one.

This may help though:

Initially, yes, but then I just switched to my laptop. I went and bought a whole bunch of Q-Tips, though, and I'm cleaning it right now. If I really wanted to, though, I could probably pop the keys back on, but most keys, like the spacebar, are annoying to re-attach and so I' putting that off.

I'd like to clean out my laptop keyboard too, but last time I tried that, I got the Shift and 2 keys stuck. There's like a hell lot of dirt and hair under there.
