.... We need rooms dug out... why?  We're sleeping just fine.  No, we need to be focused on food and drink.  My plan greatly simplifies both activities.  After that then we can focus on sleeping, besides if it warms up sleeping in a tent won't be so terrible anyhow.

List of priorities:
(In descending order)
1. Make and install floodgate before river thaws.
2. Get farming set up.
3. Move stockpiles inside.
4. Finish tunnel connecting river.
5. Make bedrooms.
6. Move workshops inside.

The first post says you have over a thousand food... how long will that last?

Each unit is a meals worth, regardless of whatever other effects it causes. with 11 people, that's 22 to 33 meals per day on average. So in the first three days we've eaten about 100 food and 100 drink...

I like this, this is a good plan.

Just channel out a part of the riverbank, and stuff the floodgate in.
We can connect it later.

no no, I want to channel the ice, then dig a hole straight into the riverbank, that way the water in the tunnel SHOULDN'T freeze because it has a nice insulating layer of dirt.

Norrec's right. It's one ice ramp and one square of dirt worth of mining. Possibly a dirt ramp as well.

Shade: How many hours does it take to build a floodgate, and can this be reduced by me being helped by some random unskilled mason?

It would probably take a full day's work at least, similar to the table. Being assisted might help, or they might break it.

Will we have a few days before the ice melts, or will it melt as soon as Spring starts?

Is the river even frozen completely through?

The river will remain frozen for at least another week. It will melt from the bottom upwards. You're not sure how deep it is, being opaque and all.

Guys, my architectural intuition tells me that if the tunnel must either be built deeper under the dirt, or heavily braced if it's built directly under the surface.

Eat: Cooked food
Drink: Wine
Sleep: In tent

000-0800: Sleep
0800-0900: Breakfast
0900-1800: Make stone floodgate
1800-1900: Dinner
1900-2300: Make stone floodgate
2300-2400:  Play with kitten. Encourage vermin-chasing.

8 hours sleep
2 hours eating
13 hours making stone floodgate (4 hours at night)

We can probably whip up some sort of piping that'll function as bracing, too.

Priority for the irrigation channel is getting the floodgate installed, though.

also:

_ice_ H___ground___
       |__X|

X = floodgate.
H = was ice.

Top-down:

z0
------.....
-----V.....
------.....

z-1
------ddddd
----^TXddd
-----dddddd

- = ice floor/wall
. = dirt ground
d = dirt wall
X = floodgate
V/^ = ramp down/up

I'll let you guys flesh out the details, just so long as it gets done before the river thaws.

I'd prefer to build it at z-2.

Ideally, I'd like to line the tunnel walls with tessellating square and octagonal stone tiles. Water gets even worse when it spends too long surrounded by dirt.

the dirt is probably not there at z-2.  Hopefully >.>  Either way we can do that part in the main tunnel and just have the flood gate be a quickie of a job.
