compost pile

you have a ton of refuse no?  why can't it be composted.  This makes fertilization more practical and varied.

for a more complex composting the type of compost effects flavors (everbody knows that elf and goblin make for great helmets, but kobold is sublime)

With the current system, the only way I can think of is if you can put Refuse in barrels, and after a while it turns into fertilizer? That'd be good to have. As long as it's not like, bones or something.

+1 to idea, +1 to barrels, +1 to no bones (finally a place to put refuse!)

however it should be less effective than potash and should require some fertilizer to start making more.

I guess you could make it work by designating a refuse as a compost (or every opting for refuse stockpile could be a compost). It might need special conditions (certain amount of water, soil underneath, certain temperature, something else) so it is a bit harder. Then everything that decays in there would add a bit up to the stockpiles fertilizer production, much like melting metal objects does adds fractions of bars. When enough stuff had decayed, the stockpile would create a unit of "fertilizer" or what ever it would make, much like the smelter. This could then be stored to a barrel, bag or whatever suitable vessel.

I like the idea of composting in barrels. Also, maybe it could done in bins as well, but might spawn a puff of miasma now and then if kept inside? I dunno.

Oh my, I just realized; what if you could compost your dead dwarves instead of burying them.  :-X
