So, I finnally got some immigrants I could turn into soldiers. I let them wrestle for abit, now I want them to have real weapons. They all have a sword in their inventory, but do not equip it nor being a Swords-dwarf or whatever

In their inventories, are the swords marked "Hauled," or "Right Hand" or "Left Hand?" If it's in one of their hands, it is equipped. A soldier isn't a swordsdwarf just because they're wielding a sword. Actually, the weapon they carry doesn't affect their title or color at all; the sole determinant of what title and color a soldier is is their weapon skills. A dwarf whose highest "weapon" skill is wrestling will be a wrestler. Train them a bit until their swordsdwarfship has improved, and they should turn into swordsdwarves.

How would I train them to be a swords-dwarf then? I am quite new here, I have no idea.

Also, consider looking up "Danger Rooms" on the wiki; a trifle exploitive, but much, much faster/more dependable.

Or if you're into realism, capture some animals/goblins and have your military fight them 'gladiator' style.

thay need:
A) some one how has some skill in swords or some other battle skill to be in the squad
B) a set training time

you can train them by just telling them to attack the local wildlife.
Equipment

armour
armor is the key to wining,i have seen 20 dwarfs armed and armored in steel fight 200 elfs and win.
any armor is better than nothing,even a plain cat leather robe will stop an elf's blade.


Shield
the shield is in skilled hands stronger than the best armor.

yep. when their sword skill catches up to their wrestling they'll become swordsdwarves

Okay, so my soldiers have been wrestling for quite awhile yet, no swords-dwarves at all, I believe

Are they leveling up swords at all?
Check their stats quickly by going to [ u]nits, finding the dwarf, then view [c]reature.

I do not believe so, no. I have had them wrestling as I was told. But it seems no-one has told me how to raise swords-skill.

If they have swords, they should be training swordsdwarfship when doing individual combat drills in a barracks.
When you say you've "had them wrestling", what do you mean?

The soldiers each have a type of iron weapon in their hands (right/left) . I tell them to spar, however, they just well, spar and only gain wrestling skill.

How many in-game years has this been happening?
Sometimes no-skillers take a while to get to a novice level.
