That said, as I keep on saying, I am really tired of people thinking that for some reason this is acceptable. Look: I don't care if it's men, women, retarded people, Christians, atheists, rednecks, hippies, liberal arts majors, or duck-enthusiasts. I am sick of hearing this bullshit everywhere, only to be swept under the rug because "oh, he didn't mean it. He was just angry."
Yeah. Well, I'm getting pretty pissed, myself. What makes this okay? Why should it be fine for this to happen? Would you feel the same way if he showed up and wrote "I hate all gay people, not because I'm a repressed homosexual or something, but just because they piss me off to the utmost extreme?" How would you feel if he put in "black people" or "Asians?"
But it's fine here, huh?
I know you weren't really replying to me in particular here, but I definitely agree. It's stupid, harmful, and is indicative of problems with how society operates/teaches people to operate. It's not acceptable, and we're right to say so.
Okay. Look, I'm sorry. I'm getting kind of angry because it seems like every relationship thread I run into here is full of objectification and just general ... crap. I don't condemn the OP. I don't dislike him. I am just tired of the way people are treating each other here. I'm tired of the "funny" lolsexism and "haha, you seriously wouldn't let her do X--she's a woman!" comments I hear in my daily life. Sick of it. Disgusted.
And no, this probably isn't the right place to unload this, for which I am very sorry.
You're on an Internet forum largely composed of adolescent boys with varying degrees and types of geekishness. That sort of demographic on the Internet seems to think that misogyny is hilarious comedy fodder to begin with sometimes, and it doesn't really help that Life Advice is full of trolling and idiotic joke-posting. Obviously, none of this is a good thing, but I'm not the least bit surprised by any of it. Of course, the fact that it's predictable enough to
expect tends to make it even more frustrating.
I don't think it's a bad idea to have brought it up here, since that's really all you can do: Bring it up when it's relevant and make it clear that it's harmful.
Of course, I don't think this thread is the best example of it, either, but even just the single frustrated comment about "women" is sort of groan-inducing in light of its precedents.
I don't care if you make basement dwelling neck-beard male-targeting jokes about me. If there was a women majority here, you'd see more anti-male stereotyping. Feel free to even it out if you can keep it in joke format. It's the internet. Even 'nigger' is funny if he stole my bike.
I think the OP learned a valuable lesson on how to spot someone that's just using him. Live and learn.
It wasn't "male-targeting". It was sexism-targeting. She's already stated that she knows it would be just as bad if a woman were doing it regarding men.
Even 'nigger' is funny if he stole my bike.
Quoting this again with emphasis. First off, this isn't even relevant: The statement in this thread wasn't even meant as a joke. This isn't an example of someone making a tasteless joke, it's an example of someone painting with broad strokes because he's frustrated with a particular person (or people).
It's also kind of annoying how a lot of the Internet has this quasi-hipster "ironic" bullshit attitude towards things like sexism, racism, and homophobia, where they'll constantly say and think rather hideous things about those subjects, but mask over it with "I'm just joking around" -- to some of these people, I don't think there's a
difference between "joking" and sincerity anymore. Not that I'm condemning the very concept of a tasteless joke, but there are trends surrounding them on the Internet that are, quite frankly, disturbing, and say more about some people than they'd let on.
