Unfortunately, I'll be out of comission for the next three weeks, as I need to study for my upcoming exams. Valdemar, feel free to play for another turn in my stead.

(team #3 post)

Year #2, played by Symmetry, has seen construction work proceed like a house on fire and several highly-skilled dwarves now stand ready to furnish Mountain-Banners with articles worthy of a bridge of legend.

The savefile

Year 3 is now open for application.  Your turn will be vital in determining the shape of the main bridge structure.  To apply, download the savefile, read the notes in the enclosed Guide, and PM me.  Play will pause until January 26th, or as soon as you sign up, whichever comes first.

See also Symmetry's post.

The map:  http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-1939-mountainbanners

There's something wrong with the viewer for side and front views, which is a shame, but you can get the idea from the top down view.

Overview:
:)

Our miners fought off some wolves, lots of immigrants arrived (46 dwarves now iirc), we're still swimming in food (running out of room for it), and funding the entire enterprise on masterwork socks which I really, really hope no one starts wearing.  Talk to Fedor if you want the next go.

Hah, I visit this thread every week or so and am amazed every time by the bridges.

Awesome stuff.

Damn you people. I had started something like this just for fun a while back. Of course, my idea was to build a floating castle of sorts, held up by artificial supports at the bottom of the canyon which were rigged to a lever (SELF DESTRUCT SEQUENCE INITATED). Access would only be through trapped, retractable bridges. I never finished it.   :(

Year 3 play has begun.  Since I didn't get any applications, I will play this go.

Question:  Are bridge-building teams allowed to use any cheats?

I haven't gotten any response from Anvilsmith, so my partner Lacero (Symmetry) suggests I ask the questions on this thread so that everyone can have a say.

* May we get glass by editing the raws to allow use of our soil type?
* May we get magma for smelting, forging, and glassworking  by using the makemagma utility (as opposed to simply using it to create terrain features)?

What's your take?  Should any cheats be allowed?  If yes, then what limits should there be?

Depends on what you deem unsportsmanlike, I suppose. For comparison, I've used:
  • No Invaders
  • No Economy
  • Lava Utility
  • Dwarf Companion to butcher two cat-loving dwarves in the first year
...all of which may be considered cheating. I'm of the opinion that style trumps gameplay in this scenario, so the above is fine.

Something that grants an advantage for the purposes of the actual contest should probably be avoided - like a hack to build blocks in midair, or somesuch.

Okay, I'm finally getting some free time in which to build the bridge. Year 3 is on its way.

Valdemar, please let me know whether you're still playing. Otherwise, anyone willing to join (or, rather, be) my team is welcome to discuss it with me.

Well, I can respond now. Turn the economy and invaders off if you like; I don't think they'll come up until year 5 or 6, anyway, so they wouldn't actually contribute to the game's challenge rating. I'm keeping both on for my team's bridge, though I don't plan to start an economy, and will likely get no goblin siegers.
