Exploratory shaft to magma sea

I am desperately low on fuel.  So I've decide to dig down to the magma sea I've heard about.  I've heard a lot about spiral ramps.  But I'm having a hard time visualizing this.  Can somebody show me a small diagram of how to build one?  And is this the best way to dig this shaft?

If you just want to dig down as fast as possible, the quickest way would just be a stair case.

d-j is a downwards stair
d-i is an upwards and downwards stair
d-u is an upwards stair

Basically, you want to place a downwards stair case at the top of the shaft, and then just place more and more up/down stairs until you reach the bottom, where you place an upwards stair.

Hopefully, that makes some sense...
