Reminds me of an old bug which caused artifacts to be made out of the stuff that causes black lung disease in I forget which mod...

Dwarven economics are still in the experimental stages. The humans have told them that they need to throw a lot of money around to get things going, but every time the dwarves try all they just end up with a bunch of coins lying all over the place.

That would be the single best gift to the mayor who keeps demanding tin items. Or prohibits the export of whatever you usually sell to the traders, right before they come.

Embarked on a haunted volcano. I am currently terrorized by skeletal alligators.

Yeh it was a fey mood. If it were an animal trap I would try to catch a fairy and put it in there :P
Maybe some of the merchants sell fairies or fairy bits on occasion.
Well, you do need to buy a fairy to get an air supply for your submarine...

TBH, I think that all dwarf fortress problem solving falls either on the "Rube Goldberg" method, or the "pharaonic" one.

Far as the barrel goes, here's a suggestion. Channel out a square near the cavern and create a garbage dump zone near it.

Have a dwarf dump the barrel into the pit. Just before he does, pause the game, dramatically declare "I cast Magic Missile Barrel at the darkness!", and unpause.

A magic missile barrel used to store plump helmets. What's next, a Raise Dead hospital bed?
With DF's healthcare system, it's probably closer to MIDDLE Finger of Death. Or Meteor Fall.
Fixed. ;D

You'll be siege-proof! No one would want to attack a fortress of suck a low value.

It honestly feels like a lot of their problems came from the fact that their entire team was composed of cats, and the people who were supposed to be herding them were also cats.
