Unable to smooth floors
« on: September 14, 2006, 04:12:00 am »

I think I remember this being reported before, not sure, but I'll give it a bump.

If you harvest plants on the floor, you are forever unable to smooth that floor since it goes from Example: "Talc Cavern Floor" to "Mud/Dirt". This is sad, since now I have unfixable spots in my well room that cannot be smoothed.

It's especially annoying if that happens between your entrance and the trade depot, as you have to build a bridge on otherwise perfectly fine floor space, just to attract the human wagons. And I think there are other problems with the mud/dirt type of floor: I had the problem that one of my bridges over the cave river never got finished, but neither got suspendet due to some item blocking etc. When I watched the dwarve trying to design it, he was standing on a mud/dirt tile constantly flashing with a brown background (losing his footing in the mud?). I finally managed to build it by making it a bit larger and so having the dwarve stand on another tile for designing the bridge.

I have a related problem: I created a barracks by installing floodgates in two spaces that were open to the river, and clearing out a former copper mine into a tidy shape. The empty area where the copper vein had been was muddy from a prior flood, and some spaces had once had plants growing in them.

All but two of the formerly-muddy spaces dried out nicely and could be detailed. Those two have refused to dry out, and there've been at least two winters since the squares were last flooded.

Unfortunately I don't know whether the stubbornly muddy squares had been plants squares or not.  :(

Any muddied square has some chance of becoming permenently mud/dirt.  If you K over it and it says "Mud/Dirt" and not "Muddy [stone] cavern floor" it's ALWAYS going to be Mud/Dirt.

If you could build a single tile road on top of mud, I wouldn't mind it, but you can't build roads inside.

The road wouldn't help -- the road would mean you couldn't place buildings on the tile any longer, so it needs to actually change the map instead.  Perhaps roads should do that anyway, but then things like gold roads would need more map information, which isn't currently possible.

You could always do both.
Ie normal dirt/stone roads change the map.

blocks/metals change the map the same way a dirt road does, but overlay whatever it is they currently overlay to give the nice golden-brick-road look.

If you smooth the floors before you flood them they will always remain stone. As for the natural floods on the cave river you just tunnel until you find limestone, detail, then detail the last few tiles.

Would it be possible to add the ability to build 'flooring' over mud/dirt tiles?

Under the hood (code-wise), the act of building 'flooring' could simply change the tile back from mud/dirt to stone of whatever type the 'flooring' is made of.

The difference between 'flooring' and road would, of course, be that you can build over flooring as if it were natural cavern floor.

I'd like to second this request.  I'm a bit OCD and permanently muddy tiles in my smoothed hallways really bother me.  I do try to get to them before the floods come, but that's a lot of smoothing to worry about, especially early on in the game when there's so much else on your plate.

The intruder arose, casting off its black cloak.  "Behold, stunted jesters!  It is I, Scuro!"  A jagged scar marked the goblin's face from eye to chin, his greasy mane gray and wild, and about his neck was the broken silver amulet, strapped together by a leather band.

Any technical reason why you can't detail mud/dirt squares to get rid of them?

how do you smooth mud and make it stone?

though mind you... how do you dump some mud over stone and turn the stone into mud?

Takes a lot of walking.  If you wear down the stone enough (i.e. make a pit) and then fill it with mud/dirt and walk on it enough all at the same time you'll find that you can't clean the mud/dirt away to leave stone--it's just too far down.

Is there any reason we can't build roads indoors, by the way? I mean, why just build a platinum road outside and platinum bridges all the way to trade depot indoors, when you could have a platinum road the entire way?

(Over which you build platinum bridges, of course. The trade depot is also built from platinum blocks.)

I forgot to mention: The entire road is lined with platinum statues.

They menace with spikes of platinum.
