SuperDwarven Pluto Expedition!!
« on: November 05, 2010, 06:33:51 pm »

I was bored one day and started looking random stuff up. One of the things was Pluto. From the description on Wikipedia, It was described as a dwarf planet. I took one look and was like DORFS?! So I came up with the idea of a super-dwarven Pluto expedition. BUT, having no experience with modding, I was wondering if anyone could help me make or even make by themself a mod of DF:Pluto.

Unless you modded dwarves to not need air you would have a heck of a time starting a fort there. Also, I am not sure you can even get rid of air in game.

You can make a very cold world. However, you still get a narrow area of warm. I have yet to be able to successfully gen a complete ice planet. Frankly I don't think elves or humans could spawn in the world if it were like that because you might not have plains or forest. You'd be left with probably a couple dwarven civs and a bajillion gobos lol.

Actually come to think of it, sounds like fun.

Turn air into a material that you first need to create to be able to use. You'd have to build a sealed dome with some form of pipe system to pump air everywhere. Moss if I believe correctly absorbs CO2 and makes O2 in return? Make farm plots of MOSS to create air before your embark group's air tanks run out. They come equipped with them of course so they don't die outright.

OH.. and picture this. There'd be various dangers like dome breaches letting air escape into space. Picture having to embark onto an ASTEROID. Picture yourself making a pretty dome base filled with rich oxygen, farm plots that produce food to make it self sustainable. But then suddenly..

An asteroid has hit your fortress! A breach has been made!

AIR IS NOW FLOODING OUT INTO SPACE, CAUSING ANY DWARF CLOSE ENOUGH TO GET SUCKED INTO SPACE AS WELL. You'd have to build doors to lock atmospheres in different rooms so they your entire fortress does not get destroyed in just 1 hit.

um.. ya imaginitive and all but I don't think any of it could be done currently.

Didn't say it was possible. I'm somewhat of a dreamer.

Well, if you make water into "air" and make dwarves aquatic, that could be a start. I know little about modding though, so that idea is probably just stupid.

From this, it sounds like 'air' would be like a mixture of booze(except required) and water physics. Maybe the wagon could be a spaceship? And instead of thieves and smbushes, Space raiders and dome breaches.

Also, I do want help making it (I have NO experience w/mods, except playing them  :D), But it'll take a while (see previous parenthesis).

This should go in the modding section. They know much more about it that most of us lurkers.

Thunder, water is not moddable and aquatic dwarves will still not path into water;therefore, aquatic dwarves will drown on land. The oxygen limitation thing might be possible if you make it a food...Maybe "oxygen-enriched plant matter" or some such that you can sci-fi into being food that gives you air. That way, starvation=oxygen deprivation. It won't be quite as good as you'd like and you'd have to have just the one plant, but I think that'd work. Besides the fact that it isn't perfect having only this plant would make sense because, hey, since when did Pluto have plant life?

Actually, I think you could simulate air pretty well by making dwarves aquatic and filling with woter. Either that or build an underwater fortress.

Dwarves will not path in or through water. They also won't build things. An air-filled underwater fortress would work, though.

Idea! Modify the world-gen information to give you a large number of embark points, find a suitable place, embark, and spend all of them on stone. Then, spend that fortress building yourself a "space-station" in the water. The easiest way I can think of doing this would be to find a lake that freezes during part of the year and wait for it the lake to freeze. Then, you would go to the init, turn temperatures off, and work with that until you finished. After the work was completed you could turn temperature back on and abandon. When you reclaim, wait 'til the ice melts and turn it back off. Bam! Permanently submerged settlement.

Yes but that would get really boring, really fast. There would be no sieges at all and no caravans.

Very true, so it should be connected to the surface. For roleplaying's sake the gate would have to remain shut in order to keep the air in, but it wouldn't be too hard to just leave out corner pieces. If you do that, things can get through and that means the fort isn't really as sealed off as it appears.

hmm ya in that same vein you could make an airlock system with pressure plates and floodgates or hatches and put your trade depot in a glass dome on the surface. You could then mod in an oxygen plant, draft your broker into the military, this way the broker carries a backpack with said oxy plant in it. Viola oxygen tank.
