We ought to make that game~

DF's probably not going to let us embark inside of a glass dome at the start and have oxygen tanks n suits required to go past airlocks and so forth in any remotely close release.

But as it's own game? Much easier to implement things like this, fairly early on even. Really it wouldn't even take much unique thought to pull off- you could just have some kind of vacuum surviving alien species assault to place after you got the colonists to run around and do basic jobs. So really somebody that could pull off the basic interface in the first place would have a really easy time just trying to make DF concepts spacey.

But hey, implementing stuff? Pfft, who would wanna do that? Let's just keep talking about what people could do.

I'm taking a guess here, but it may work.

If you made a new creature named SpaceDwarf or any other name, make all of the limbs the same but make it an amphibious creature.  Make Alien creatures that are also amphibious, and make plants and etc. amphibious.  Then mod the world so that land is water and water is land. so the land is space and water is planets.  Planets have a chance of having air (represented by miasama) or not.  Ones with air would have our regular creatures, ones without would have the created creatures.  If you even go so far as to say allowing to have multi-regional fortresses (sending x amount of dwarfs to a different planet or different part of the planet) would require large caravans with fortifications and space to have your dwarves inside of to represent space ships. the fortifications are for marksdwarves to shoot a new weapon called missile bolts that can destroy things inside of other ships if they hit it enough.  then some other items would be required to be able to fly it like engines and control panels.

Yeah, probably isn't going to work though.

You won't be getting all the cool spacy stuff like a need for air, spacecraft, changing physics and all that, but you really can make a pluto-like DF world otherwise.

First, you need to delete all plants and animals except those that exist below ground (except pets, and elementals like blizzard men and bronze colossi, maybe sea creatures if we assume lack of atmosphere/the water being perpetually frozen doesn't matter)
Second, remove all soil and stone types that require living organisms to form. (no coal, lignite, limestone, chalk, calcite, or petrified wood for starters)
Third, you need to create a world gen parameter set that allows only deserts, tundras, glaciers, and mountains, and is extremely cold. Preferably you'd want to remove or reduce water features as much as possible. Volcanic features should also be reduced to zero/removed since pluto is more than likely completely cold, but that would be very un-Fun.
Fourth, turn off the periodic erosion of extreme cliffs, and reduce the erosion cycle to 0.

You may also extend the z-levels above and below ground to your heart's content, i wouldn't recommend that though as it would be extraordinarily laggy.

After genning the world, turn off temperatures and embark. Dig down to where you feel safe, drag your things inside, and seal yourself in. Then save, exit, turn temperature calculations back on, and restart. Pray you dug deep enough to prevent your dwarves from dieing instantaneously in the cold.

I may think of more, and I'm doing this now.

Pluto likely has small volcanoes caused by tidal heating, but they would spew water and ammonia, something like the plumes of Enceladus.

Air is for wimps elves. Do you see "Needs air to get through the working day?" in the description of a dwarf?

These all sound like awesome ideas, but maybe we COULD have oxygen tanks...

Also, I kinda have to agree that the extensive modding (new physics, spacecraft,etc) WOULd probably take months if not years of modding devotion....BUT WHAT DO I KNOW, I have no experience. :D

I also like the idea of an underground fortress with paths to the surface. Like a secret base underground with random access shafts. That way, random SPACE PIRATES could come in, dismantle/blow up your hatch covers(assuming you have some) and storm your base...

I think Noachian period Mars would be cooler. Water, seas and magma would be legit, and we could play the goblins as 'green martian men'.

That may be true, and i respect your opinion(maybe :) ) but this is the superdwarven PLUTO expedition, not the superdwarven MARTIAN expedition. Besides, Pluto's more challenging.  :P

Adamantine dwarves against giant space spiders, all the while flooding their farms with oxygen and growing near-absolute-zero-tolerant mushrooms on them.

Hey guys you could do it like this:

ICE
All the water on the surface is ice so you heat it up to get water. you could then make a reservoir and re freeze for transportation.

OXYGEN
well in dwarf fortress you can make your own gasses! Just make it so that if there exposed to the air then there skin starts to swell then the tissue then E.C.T until it eventually reaches the brain. make the oxygen plant creates either "oxygen tank" or "free oxygen" which cures this.

ALIENS
Just make them flying space slimes with massive teeth

SPACECRAFT
There could be other people on Pluto! just make it a moon buggy!

and finally
WILDLIFE
Go through archives and movies and get the coolest , least over powered , non WOW and plausibly alien creatures and make them cold resistant.
