i would just hollow out a huge loop underground and build a train fort that runs on tracks constantly going around and around. or you could build a dwarven version of project thor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Thor#Project_Thor on rails in the sky

Lifts? Depends on how they're used. If I can make a fortress that is inaccessible except from a lift that has to be lowered to let something in, i'll do that. Then another lift will take dwarves down below. It shall be awesome

CASTLE HETERODYNE! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE![/squee]

Sorry. But yes, I would. I'll develop a steampunk AI to work it too.

And then I'd make a titan. I mean a titan of the Adeptus Titanicus kind.

Having read large parts of that webcomic, I second this motion.

I am particularly fond of the mass-melting system mentioned earlier.

I would probably go with a train-track of 10x10 atom smashers making a circuit around the outside of the map.

Dwarf Fortress: So horrifying the players would rather talk about nice things, like Warhammer 40k.

A surface settlement that retracts into the ground, rows of siege engine turrets rising in its place, and launch rails for dwarven mecha to be deployed whenever a Titan comes calling.
Camo Turrets from MechCommander 2. Of course, ballistae and catapults are really long ranged. Not like SRMs.
But still.
I can just imagine...
Goblins: I'mma kill this fort and take their stuff! *charge in single file*
Ballista Turret: *appears and kills all the goblins but one*
Remaining goblin: They have stealth turrets! Run! *runs*
For bonus points, automatically go underground when there aren't any loaded siege weapons.

Also: Construction dock. Big pit with bridges as scaffolding on various Z- levels, and nice, smooth surfaces. Add some system of getting a building out (depending on power level requirement: If it doesn't require any particular power, a simple rail on the wall would do it. If not, either a ramp on one side or a flotation system. (Of course, that requires density calculations, as well as a pretty light, and watertight, building. Featherwood, maybe?)
Build a building on wheels in the dock.
Remove scaffolding.
Move building out of dock.
Place hole in the ground for wheels where you want to build the building.
Drop wheels into hole.
Tada!
You can then deconstruct the rails. No one will ever know...

I want an express squad elevator to the surface.

If I can make it, I'll make random Eva noises... and I'll name my squad leaders Shinji, auska, or Rei.

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

Rebuild the statue from "dwarves within dwarves", and make it stomp on goblins.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Straight hallway full of pressure plate-activated crushers.

Like Thwomps.

If you stop moving for even a second, you get smashed to pieces.

I'll probably end up attempting to build something outlandish and mind-implodingly complex. Y'know, like a massive dome-shaped dining room centered around a huge animated orrery. Inside each planet would be a noble's bedroom. If one pisses me off, I pull his room's associated lever, and he splats on the dining room below. Or, like, a magma-drowning trap that takes you to the magma rather than the other way around.

Attempt.

Fans could be good.

Because in RL mines, two things are your biggest enemy: The air and the water. The latter we can already deal with in Dorf Fort wiht pumps, and the former isn't a problem yet. But imagine if it was? You could use fans to keep the air clean.

Until, of course, a forgotten beast starts spraying deadly dust. Then your circulated air becomes a nightmare.

I like the idea of the Entrance hall that acts like a huge lift :)

Ofcourse a secondary entrance will be needed for day to day access.

The once dark-grey walls are now the dark brown of stained blood. At either side of the path leading to the great granite gates is covered with the corpses and skeletons of Goblin invaders.
Some are still fresh. One is still moving.
As you approach the gate a nervous guard looses a bolt in your direction. Silence... Slowly, gradually, the huge doors screech open. Inside there is a courtyard, the floor wet with blood. Welcome to the front-line. Welcome; to Cloisteredwood.

A fortress in which all the rooms, hallways and corridors constantly shift places.

It'd eat fps, but it'd be so damn cool. "To the tanner. Oh wait, this is a metalsmiths forge now. And wasn't there a staircase behind me? Is that the booze stockpile accelerating away from me at about 40 Urists per hour? OH GOD!"
