I can see it now: Dwarven mecha right foot lifts off, then left foot before right lands...

"A section of the cavern has collapsed!"

I guess it's time for dwarven life-alert now.

Also, I'd build massive double doors with statues and stuff built into them.

With each statue row representing a z-level.
Or better, with the entire thing being cast obsidian, including the statues.

Hate to rain magma on the parade, but any sort of dwarven mecha would require a massively more complex physics model. Unless the moving parts are the "one bit moves, the other anchors, and which is which never changes" sort, DF would have to calculate the mass, moment of inertia, and force applied or all sorts of things or things would get weird. And that would be ridiculously hard to display as well, as rotation would wreak all sorts of havoc.

Imagine if he gives us something simple.  A system where, when activated or given power, the object moves in a given direction.  Anything relying on that object for support moves as well. It does not move if something is in the way.

Do you have any idea how much we could do with /just that/?

That would actually be the best turn of events.
With enough effort, it would make even the craziest projects a reality.

A surface settlement that retracts into the ground, rows of siege engine turrets rising in its place, and launch rails for dwarven mecha to be deployed whenever a Titan comes calling.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Mile-high magma pump, probably.

We already have an orbital magma canon...

Exerpt from townbrush.txt by Internet Kraken:

"Nobody wants to live in Townbrush, and for good reason. Almost everyone that has come to Townbrush has been eaten, stabbed, crushed, drowned, hacked, incinerated, or beaten to death with an octopre skin backpack. When we're not under siege, we're being attacked by Forgotten Beasts. And when we're not being attacked by Forgotten Beasts, there's probably a zombie whale crushing someone to death in the dining room."

I'm picturing three or four dorfs holding stones and waiting for an elevator to arrive.

Me too. Also my fort defeated cause my soldiers couldn't get to the elevator due to overusage from civilians going to burrows.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

A giant hammer made of obsidian floodgates and filled with magma.
It would swing down and all the flood gates would open for a split second.

Elevators! Many elevators! And crushing walls! And moving platforms! Nothing that could possibly make life easier for all my Urist McToodumbtolive, in short.

Personally, I think the possibilities that arise from combining moving fortress sections with dwarfputing are so great it's almost scary. Even with the constraints that the system is sure to have, megaprojects will never be the same. Personally I like the constantly shifting maze of insanity idea. And the ballistae on wheels. And the Hammer of Armok could finally be a reality.
