I don't have any great ambitions, but I always look at my fortresses these days and think *sigh, I wish I had solid steel doors six tiles wide and eight tall*

I'm not so fond of all them new fangled mechanisms that make for a modern production line, but I like to think of the mechas as Golems and then they become suitably fantasy.  So I might build two huge golems to protect my steel gate, controllable via a lever room in their chest.

Also, in fortress talk 8 or thereabouts Toady mentions much of this stuff, walking fortresses, boats, funky phsyics etc.

What I'd really like is to have a nice big goods elevator, to make really deep mining much easier. Haulers dump ore/gems on the elevator, it gets lifted up to the stockpiles where a few more haulers sort it out. Would make life much easier.

Of course that could lead to interesting fun when a Forgotten Beast hijacks the lift...

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

Will this mean Instruments will finally have a use?

Can we tell the children to just stand in the elevators all day and play terrible music?

I've been trying to design an impenetrable vault, a place where you can't get at what's inside, or destroy it, even given unlimited access to dwarves, rock, picks, water, magma, etc. So far I haven't come up with anything truly impenetrable, but with moving parts, it might be possible to work something up. It depends on how they work.

I will build a giant 20 z-level fist, shaking with rage, to welcome goblins and elves. Whenever either of them come, I'll press a little switch inside the fort and a rail will lift another 20 z-level pillar which will appear, from the outside, to extend from between the index and ring fingers.

Then, the same lever will raising specifically designed bridges so that they appear to spell out "HOOWUH!" to the encroachers.

Finally, the entire giant "fuck you" array will slide out on yet more rails to crush whoever has angered me so.
I've always wanted to slap someone with a rocket (or firework) propelled prosthetic hand, with the hand giving them the finger. Now my dreams may be realised through dwarf fortress.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Assuming that moving fortress parts can move freely and are not bound to rails or something like that, dwarven battletanks with magma tank on top for rapid area denial. If they are, rail-mounted battle trains with magma tanks for rapid area denial. They'll be armed with ballista and catapults which are then mounted on ANOTHER rotateable platform.

Other than that, a rapid transport vehicle that grinds gobbos into a fine paste when it moves to the exit, transporting my legendaries. Also, I will most likely make a giant bucket I can lower into the magma sea to scoop up magma, saving me from using pump stacks.

I got a feeling that a lot of this will not be possible, but I like to dream.

Steam powered battle tanks that shoot elves?

How about elevators that leads to a trade depot reserved for elves?

(Note, that trade depot will be right in the middle of the hidden fun stuff...)

I want to tell you they were bad men, cephalo.  I want to tell you that with a better overseer the Fortress never would've gotten so bad someone would get offed in a pointless fisticuffs.
But the sad truth charlie?
It was inevitable.

You could make Organs, and robotic symphonies that could give dwarves happy thoughts!

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

My Dwarves are already planning a Goblin Space Program. I've set out a few cage traps to "recruit" our first Gobbonauts.

1. In Dwarf Russia, DOOR SMASHES YOU! Make this my entrance:
Z +1
Code: [Select]
#######
###H≈≈≈ <-Water
#######
##··+BF <-B=Retracting bridge, F=To Fort
#######
Z 0
Code: [Select]
###+### <- to outside
###+###
#H++###
##∆@#+# <- @=moveblock, no floor
#######
Elsewhere:
Pump, poweredness determined by lever, from Magma to channel in Z -1
Z -1
Code: [Select]
#######
#######
#D##### <- D=Drain for Magma
###≈≈≈≈
#######
When you are under attack, move the block north two dorfs, activate the pump, close the hatch, and retract the bridge. When not, do the opposite. Any would-be destroyer of blocks (IF the block can be destroyed at all) gets magma'd in the face. If you end up against a flying fast swimming(to fight the current) magmaproof unbreathing building destroyer 2, you can obsidian the entrance. Combine this with putting an elevator under your trade depot to allow safe entry, and you have an impenetrable fortress.

2.TANKS. A bunch of atom-smashers connected to moveblocks so that I can steamroll goblins while they mill near the entrance. For large enemies, deploy archers on top of the platform, behind fortifications. Extra Credit: Put a magma reservoir with pump and windmill on top, so that you can burn your enemies without plugging your river with obsidian.

The amount of malice in this thread is actually causing me some concern. I mean, chaining up mothers and forcing them to breed, just so we can drown their children to harvest their organs? Does this strike no one else as absolutely horrific?

A fortress in which all the rooms, hallways and corridors constantly shift places.

It'd eat fps, but it'd be so damn cool. "To the tanner. Oh wait, this is a metalsmiths forge now. And wasn't there a staircase behind me? Is that the booze stockpile accelerating away from me at about 40 Urists per hour? OH GOD!"

THIS.  :o

So we got monsters above, monsters below, dwarves in the middle and a party in the dining hall. Sounds good to me.
If all else fails, remember one thing:  kittens are delicious, nutritious little goblin-baiters, cavern explorers, and ambush-finders.

With this, the first real megaproject of animation will be Cacame Aweminidade's statue that crushes every (proceeds to reread CA story) - elf that comes too close.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Massive train fortress looping around the embark.

Either that, or Dwarven airplanes. Flap the wings really fast to fly hummingbird style and dump magma on anything that opposes you.
